Established in 1876, the Wichita Public Library is spread out around the city through 8 branches. The library also has a genealogy society with a collection of 23,000 books on genealogy and magazines that trace the ancestry of people living in Kansas, the Midwest, the South, the Great Plains and the Colonial States. The history of Native Americans along with a study on their tribes and the stories of the wars they contributed in, forms the highlight of the place.
The library itself has over 1 million volumes - all of it being freely accessible to the public. However, if flipping though books does not interest you, do look out for on-going programs and festivals at the library. The African-American History Month and the Hispanic Heritage Month are annual crowd pullers and give you a rare interactive experience with the African American and Hispanic culture, its traditions and its evolution. The “Academy Awards Shorts” showcases Oscar nominated movies under 40 minutes to visitors for free and is a favourite with the locals.
