Established in the late 1930’s, the Wichita Sedgwick County Historical Museum is currently located in the city hall designed by William T. Proudfoot and George W. Bird in the late 19th century. The museum was established to showcase the history of Wichita and the Sedgwick county and currently covers 3 floors in the beautiful building along with a gift shop.
The exhibits include automobiles form the early 20th century, a short movie on the manufacturing of airplanes in Wichita, a recreated Victorian home in the city with gorgeous victorian furniture, a piano and decor items and a‘school room’ exhibit where you can see the formal layout of a classroom. The museum also has a new addition of Americana Treasures which includes rare paintings, sculptures, miniatures and decor items. The American folk art has a collection of more than 400 pieces including furniture, hunting tools and finely crafted items that showcase the work of the local craftsmen. The exhibits with real vintage cycles and cars is stunning and along with the exhibits of famous personalities and vintage costumes and gowns, the museum has become a time machine to explore 20th century Wichita.

Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum Reviews & Ratings
My daughter attended the 4 day songwriting workshop. She had a blast. Made some good friends. & I'm sure it's a memory she will never forget. The teachers were Awesome. And the last day they all dang the songs they wrote in the auditorium. We also got to tour the building a few times. The museum is just so cool. Go if you haven't been
An AMAZING museum!!! The building is a beautiful piece of history itself! There are 4 floors of wonderful antiques and artifacts that are displayed in such a way that you are taken back in time. I learned a lot about Wichita that I did not know! Very well done!! It also has a gorgeous gift shop with everything from books, to toys, to jewelry! Way to go Wichita!!
Really not for little kids I would say 7 and up. Before going I read a bunch of reviews that said this is for all age groups. I also read that there was a lot of hands on stuff for the kids including toys and dress up clothes for the kids to play with. This is no longer the case as everything is now in displays. I only got to look a little at the museum because we went here as a fun little educational something for our young children to do on a very hot afternoon and they were just to little to have any interest in what was available, but what I did see was really well done and looked very interesting.
I wanted to visit this place just because of the building! The museum is housed in the old city and it looks like a castle! The museum doesn’t have tons of hands on displays, but there is still enough hands on that my 7 year old gave it five stars. All three kids loved the old type writer set up so they could use it. There was videos here and there throughout the museum and so much information! The very rare (1 of 8 left) Jones Six automobile was my favorite. There was information about the city over the years, old toys, exquisite silver plated items, old furniture, aviation, and more. We spent three hours and barely saw everything, but were getting too hungry to keep learning. The lady working in the gift shop was super friendly and helped us with other places to see in the area. The only bummer was that they didn’t have a souvenir magnet of the museum in the shop (that’s our thing).
Excellent place! The museum it's beautifully designed and full of little details. We loved knowing more about Wichita. The staff was really kind and the gardens amazing
