  • This is a great battle field to visit. There are several stops that explain the battlefield right off the road and with pathways to each site. Or if you want to walk through the many trails that will take you through the forest to each site that is well worth it. You can walk, run, bike, or go by horse back on the trails.

  • I visited the park on 9/30 and enjoyed the visit. I could not visit everything in the time I had since there is so much to see! Staff in the visitors center are quite friendly.

  • My family and I spent the day learning about this epic seige battle. The vastness of the event cannot be overstated. From Cold Harbor to Five Forks each turn in the road offered incredible sights and stories. Visit the military cemetary, too, for perspectives on sacrifice. We sat in on a Ranger talk atvthe battle site and learned details about the Battle of the Crater we had never known (American Indians fought and died in the battle, for instance). I highly recommend a day spent learning and exploring here. Begin at the main Park center with a museum and movie about the battle. Camp at Pocahontas State Park for the full family experience!

  • It's amazing to tour such an historic battlefield and to actually see Grant's headquarters.

  • I've read about what happened near the end of the war, about the massive siege lines at Petersburg, and the desperate story of the crater and its ultimate failure to hasten the end. Definitely worth the trip, to visit the remains of the siege and the sad story of the crater, really worth the stop.
