One among the four best Buddha temples in Wuhan, the Guiyuan temple was built during the Qing Dynasty. The temple has 5 courtyards with 4 of them in four direction and one located in the middle. With subsequent decades the temple was expanded to its present size which covers an area of 46,900 sqmts.

The highlights of the temple are:

• The Depository of Buddhist texts is in the northern courtyard. A two storied building which contains a lot of Buddhist scriptures, records and relics.
• The Hall of Arahats or also known as Hall of Lohans. It is in the southern courtyard and was destroyed in the war in 1852 A.D and was later rebuilt in 1895 A.D. The hall has about 500 statues of ‘Lohans’ and still the place doesn’t look crowded. They all are life like sizes and are spread across in an interesting layout.
• Great Buddha’s hall is in the central courtyard and is adorned with many statues. There’s a Sakyamuni statue and standing beside him are two of his disciples Ananda and Kasyapa. The Avalokiteshware statue stands tall behind Sakyamuni accompanied by two dragon statues of a boy and girl.

• The legend says that if you count from a random Arhat in a given direction to the one that matches the number of your age, the identity, expression and action of this last Arhat can show your fate. This activity adds a lot of fun for people who visit the Hall of Arhats.

• On ordinary days: 10 RMB
• On holidays and festivals (May Day holiday, National Day holiday and the Spring Festival): 20 RMB
• In the evenings (New Year’s Eve, the evenings of January 8th and 15th): 40 RMB
• Each person will receive three sticks of incense with their ticket.
