A geographical centre of ancient Xi’an which was a military town in northwest China, the historic city wall extends from this tower. It is a wooden tower and one-of-its-kind in China with a height of 36 meters height.

Built in 1384 by Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang as a mark of dominance and power, the tower also served as a check point for any rivals. The engravings on the doors reflect the decorative fashion of Ming and Qing Dynasties, recounting popular stories of ancient China.

It has three layers of eves and two sides with a spiral staircase leading upstairs. The interiors are fascinating pieces of art with a distinctive Ming style of architecture.  This tower was relocated from the area near the Drum tower and was moved 1000 meters east from its original position. The relocation did not damage the tower and it is thus considered a great achievement in architectural history of China.

The original bell used n this tower was the famous Jingyun Bell belonging to the Tang Dynasty. According to a legend, this bell fell silent during the rule of Ming Dynasty and a smaller bell was installed. The original bell can be still observed at the forest of steles and stones museum.

The tower is surrounded by a fenced area which is blooms in early spring and adds to the beauty of this legendary tower. Observe this tower at night when various lanterns illuminate this enchanting tower. The Bell Tower definitely deserves a visit on your trip to Xian.
