Sandankyo Gorge, Yamagata District Reviews
One of the best places I've ever been hiking in my entire life. It's unusual that the trail is mostly paved, and I couldn't help but wonder when this was done, and what type of effort it must have taken. The system of trails runs through the gorge, and you are continually surrounded by the sounds of the white water rapids. Every few kilometers there are large waterfalls. The forest is beautiful, pristine, and verdant. I wasn't able to take the boat ride that takes you up a few hundred feet to the base of a waterfall, but I hope to do so when I return. If you want to go hiking in the Hiroshima area, I couldn't more highly recommend this place. You don't even really need hiking boots but I would suggest bringing a little water to drink.
This is a hidden spot for nature lovers and those who want to escape the crowded city. It is accessible from Hiroshima by bus which leaves Hiroshima Bus Terminal at 8:18am and returns at 15:00pm. The cost is 1.440¥ one way. There are no supermarkets or convenience stores, thus, bringing food and other necessities is recommended. I recommend to visit there on a weekend or holiday since the boat which brings visitors across the river only operates on these days. When I went I could only hike for about 50min because the path was closed at some point and the boat was not available so I had to go back. Nevertheless, it was an amazing experience in nature and soemthing I will never forget! The route is up to 11km long so it is possible to spend a whole day there hiking. There are some hotels there so staying overnight is recommended for those who want to explore the place as much as possible. I wish I could have stayed there longer. It was truly amazing.
