Situated in the scenic countryside, Yorkshire Air Museum and Allied Air Forces Memorial is a one of a kind tribute to the development of aircrafts through the ages and the men and women who served in British Air Forces.

The museum was opened to the general public in the 1980s with the aim of generating awareness about the history of aviation in the country. Apart from holding exceptional exhibitions, the Yorkshire Air Museum also has its own film production and publication department.

Over 20 buildings are dedicated to a variety of detailed displays on Air Force uniforms, Air Gunners, the Bomber Command, RAF, the Officer’s Mess, Royal Observers Corps etc. You can check out the Control Tower that has been fully restored to its wartime design. The museum has a commendable collection of military vehicles and fighter planes that were operated in World War Two and during the Cold War.

  • You can explore the insides of some of these historic machines.
  • The museum also houses a Flight Simulator not to be missed!

The museum also has a large library that can be accessed by the visitors. Check out the museum gardens, gift shop and enjoy a mean at the restaurant which recreates the ambience of an actual NAAFI.

  • Disabled friendly pathways and restrooms.
  • Try to visit early in the day to avoid large crowds.

  • Discounts on ticket prices are available for senior citizens, large groups (8 or more) and children.
  • Children under 5 years go free.
  • Special events taking place at the Yorkshire Air Museum may be charged different rates.

  • Wonderful range of mainly military aviation history. Good range of different exhibition styles with some interactive elements. Best bit was where you can get in cockpits/planes if only there was more opportunity to do this. Food looked appealing and home made. Toilets were functional - currently they are fundraising to improve these.

  • Whether your an aviation enthusiast or looking to take the kids for a day out this place has so much to offer. The only place to see a complete Halifax bomber and watch aircraft start up and fast taxi (on certain days check website for details) the museum is on the site off an operational WW2 airfield with displays in the original buildings, cannot recommend highly enough.

  • An amazing museum. Entry is 10 pounds per person, or 8 with a student discount. It's got amazing exibits. Planes you can walk in even simulators to play with. Well worth a visit if you're in the area. Very well maintained. Also includes a nice gift shop too

  • Step back in time, felt I connected to my Nana and Grandad who were ex RAF. Our 2 year old loved the large aircraft wheel ( 3 times the size of him!) And the indoor cinema. I loved the control room, felt like I was back in time.

  • I went here over the summer it was the highlight of my summer if I'm honest. If you love aircraft and are in the York area then you should really consider going. On show at the museum are lots of iconic aircraft such as the Halifax heavy bomber, harrier jump jet, mirage jet fighters and (in my opinion) the star of the show the massive Victor nuclear bomber. If aircrafts aren't your thing then there are a couple of armoured vehicles such as two striker tanks stationed in one of the hangers and a chieftain main battle tank near the entrance. Overall it is an amazing place to visit just in general and I will definitely visit it again when I get the chance
