Yosemite National Park experiences a Mediterranean sort of climate with very mild, rainy winters and dry summers. Thunderstorms can be expected in the summers and snowfall is received at the high altitude areas. The seasons can be divided into the basis of peak tourist seasons and off season.
June – September: This is the true tourist peak season for all those who want to visit the Yosemite National Park. Displays typical seasonal characteristics, the weather is perfect for some outdoor activities. Moreover, since it’s throughout the summer, almost all the facilities are open to visitors. Camping grounds tend to be full to capacity so book in advance if you’re planning to spend a night under the stars.
October-May: It’s glaringly clear when winter’s setting in at the Yosemite National Park. Snowfall is the Park’s tell! The heaviest snowfall is seen during the month of October. Although crowds are smaller in winter, most of the roads and facilities are closed, severely restricting the Park’s accessibility. Come spring, as the water and ice melt, adding to the existing waterfalls and the blossoming foliage, the tourists start flocking in.
So the best time to visit Yosemite National Park is during the months of June to September. But large crowds can be expected during this period resulting in higher tariffs and long waits in queues. A couple of months before and after the peak seasons are great time to visit if you are comfortable with the weather and want cheaper rates.
