So what if this isn’t the epitome of a traditional museum. The Yosemite museum was built with the philosophy that buildings must become part of their environments and surroundings, not stand out from it. The architecture is thus done in Rustic Style, giving the impression that it was built by the settlers who first arrived here. Looking at it seems to suggest horizontal gravitas rather than vertical as there would have been little point putting the building in competition with the cliffs surrounding the place. The exhibits of the museum focus on the Ahwahnechee Native Americans, sketches and photographs of Yosemite Park (over a 1,00,000 of them) and baskets by some famous native weavers like Lucy Telles and Maggie Howard. The place is one of the oldest museums set up by the National Park Service.

  • Located near the Yosemite NP Visitor Center in Yosemite Valley, this museum is certainly worth a visit. The varied landscape paintings of Yosemite National Park are simply beautiful. There are also exhibits in which one can learn about the human history of the valley. Some of these displays are about the "discovery" of Yosemite Valley by notable European explorers. Others can teach one about the Native Americans that had populated this magnificent Yosemite Valley for centuries. The Native basket display is amazing. Outside, exhibits continue as there are great examples of authentic Native buildings typically found in past local Indian Villages. If you check with the museum's daily schedule, you could be lucky enough to learn about native crafts or traditions in person with local Native artisans. It's a fantastic opportunity to learn about Native American history, both past and present.

  • Mel is here. tip Leonard Cohen: Susan

  • I had a pleasant stroll through the Yosemite Museum and adjoining Indian Village. It's right next to the visitor center but seems to get less traffic. The basket collection is nice but I especially liked the old Indian Motorcycle. It seems the donor disassembled this bike for fear he mother would sell it while he was away during World War I.

  • The place to learn about the history and geology of Yosemite. Good place to bring in the kids and family for the first time. There are also gift shops to buy souvenirs.

  • My family had a wonderful time at Yosemite National Park. We did not have time to visit the museum because there was so many other natural wonders to see. It was a long drive but well worth the time.
