Ramadan: This is an important festival in Zanzibar and it is followed religiously by almost everyone. If you are visiting during Ramadan, you are likely to find the usual hustle-bustle missing as most restaurants and shops are closed during the day.
Festival of the Dhow Countries: Takes place in June-July in Stone Town. It lasts for three weeks and is a celebration of music, culture, dance and language. There are various movie screenings and workshops as well.
Independence Day: Zanzibar celebrates its independence from the British on 9th December.
Mwaka Kogwa / New Year: Mukunduchi celebrates this festival with great pomp. There is a hut-burning ritual, a banana stem playfight as well as grand feast as a part of the merrymaking. This festival takes place in July.
