The coral caves of Mangapwani lie 20km north of main town Zanzibar. Despite the caves being so close to the sea, there is a pond of fresh water inside the Coral Cave. The caves were discovered when its ownership passed on to a wealthy Arab landowner. They were mainly used for its fresh water reserves. If rumours are to be believed, these caves were also used to hide slaves after the legal abolition of slavery on the island. The cave’s narrow entrance obstructs mass movement and adds to its mysterious appeal. The Mangapwani Beach is around two kilometres away from the cave.

• Stick to a group when walking into the cave.
• Wear sturdy shoes.
• Be careful if entering or drinking water from the pond.

• Reach here by taxi or dala-dala. A hired car or bike is also a good option for the commute.
