Ride this Bahn from Zermatt to Gornergrat and you will never forget the experience. The view of Matterhorn and Monte Rosa is amazing
The mountain train ride is very scenic, on time, a bit pricey but all in all well worth it. Food expectations do not match the beautiful views... a jacket even in summer time should be a must...you are way up there don't forget...
While the view up the mountain was great, I was very disappointed with the attitude of the salesperson at one of the counters. I went to Gornergrat on 8th March but I forgot to pick up the certificate that says you reached the summit while I was up there. On the 9th morning, before my train at 11.13am, I quickly went to the Gornergrat sales counter and asked one of the salesperson there if they have the certificates as I was hoping to have it as a souvenir. The lady attending to me said that I can get it from the ticket office in the train station on the opposite side. When I tried to ask for more information, she insisted 'ticket office, opposite'. So I did what she had said and went to the train ticket office, there's only one train station there so I guess I can't go wrong. I went in, spoke to one of the staff there, and they gave me a bewildered look at my request. 'This is the train station, not the Gornergrat service, we are a different company, why would we have certificates from Gornergrat?' The guy makes sense. So, silly me just stood there - awkward, embarrased and angry. By that time, I had to catch my train, I didn't have time to march back and give her a piece of my mind. I don't really care about the certificate anymore, but I'm really upset that the staff would lie, or worse give wrong information about something that they don't know about, just for the sake of giving an answer. All I did was go up to her, and ask a question politely, I don't think I deserved such treatment.
Incredible view all the way up to the top. It's a truly awe-inspiring experience. Absolutely no hiking involved and one can find a café at the top. So don't worry about fitness or mountain sickness. If you take the train, you can consider the half-day return ticket which is only 28 francs with a Swiss Travel Pass or equivalent. This applies from the 15:36 train onwards leaving from Zermatt. Note that this isn't listed on the website.
