If you’re in Zermatt for a short while and are on a mission to see as much as Zermatt as you can in a short span, the Matterhorn Museum should be your first stop. In the most basic sense, the museum traces the development of Zermatt from a tiny Alpine village to the ski resort destination it is today!

The museum also features the perils of all those who tried to scale the Matterhorn, losing their life in the bargain. In fact, one of the exhibits that is frequently viewed is a piece of snapped rope from the first ever attempt to scale the mountain, back in 1865. Other highlights you should not miss out on include the multimedia room where excerpts of a film are shown, a stone axe from the Neolithic Age and the remains of a mercenary from the 16th century. Also, visit the popular attractions in the city by following Zermatt Itinerary 3 Days.

  • Amazing step back in time at the historical side of the area. Really good displays and artifacts. Allow at least an hour to take a look around.

  • A must visit first stop before anything else. After visiting this museum knowing the history of the place, you will understand and appreciate the place better. Very interesting history

  • GOOD INFO ON THE MOUNTAIN RANGES AND NICE VIDEOS ON THE MATTERHORN

  • Definetly worth a couple of hours to learn and appreciate the area and its place in mountain clkmbing history

  • Not too big, but well thought out. It tells the story of the first climb of the Matterhorn and the tragedy that followed as well as a host of other aspects of life in Zermatt and adventurers on the Matterhorn. It contains many items and the infamous broken rope. I like how a lot of it is interactive and up close. If moving at an okay speed, you could spend about 1-1.5 hours here. It is also free for Swiss Travel Pass holders.
