Overview

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is named after the Vilcanota River or Sacred River of the Incas which is also called the Urubamba River. The ancient Incas discovered a connection between this river with the Milky Way and believed that they were connected with the galaxy. The fertile land along the river turned this valley into one of the most important agriculture centers of the Inca empire. The Incas constructed terraces and pyramids in the ground in honor to their divinities. This valley is also home to a few Incan administration centers including Pisaq.
