Overview
Makalu Base camp lies in the Makalu- Barun National Park, the 8th national park in the Himalaya region of Nepal, which was established in 1992, covering an area of 1500 k.m. Mt. Makalu (8,481m) is the 5th highest peak in the world; an isolated peak with shape of a four-sided pyramid.
Trekking on this region offers stunning contrasts, where high waterfalls cascade into deep gorges, craggy rocks rise from lush green forests, and colorful flowers bloom beneath white snow peaks. This unique landscape shelters some of the last pristine mountain ecosystems on earth. Rare species of animals and plants flourish in diverse climates and habitats, relatively undisturbed by human kind.
This trek is started from Tumlingtar after taking a short flight from Kathmandu and walk through river gorge and climb up the Shipton La Pass (4210m) into the upper Barun river valley and return to Tumlingtar after a visit to Makala Base Camp (4870m).
