Our transportation to Sapa was disappointing: a small, very bumpy van where we were given no information as to bathroom stops, length of drive, or how to use the drink tickets that we were given. However once we got to Sapa everything was very nice. We stayed at the Sunny Mountain Hotel where we were greeted warmly and served a very nice, large lunch. Since we do not eat beef or pork the restaurant staff was nice enough to change the meat in those dishes to chicken and shrimp. After lunch we checked in to our room and then we were met by our tour guide for the afternoon, Me, a young local Hmong woman. Me walked us through the CatCat village, explained how the local Hmong lived and live, and took us to a waterfall and the village dance show. She was very interesting to talk to and we had a lovely afternoon. The next morning we again had Me as our tour guide and we were joined by approximately 10 other tourists. We walked approximately 8 miles, mostly downhill, but because the pathway was frequently rocky, muddy and slippery Me had brought six other Hmong women to hold our hands and help us walk down the trails without falling. These women were so kind and helpful. We trekked through the countryside, walked on roads and waded through rice paddies, passing several Hmong villages along the way. The trip was challenging but beautiful and informative. Near the end of the trip the women who had helped us showed us items that they had sewn and were selling. Of course I would have expected to tip the women who helped us and I had planned to buy several items but it was difficult to feel the need to buy from the one person that had helped you, rather than from the person who was selling the item/color you wanted to buy. Future travelers should know to bring cash (items cost approximately $15 US each.) These women were very polite and understanding of what we wanted to purchase but along the way there are other women and children who are trying to sell things who are quite persistent. (This is not a judgment as to the tour but rather something that future travelers might benefit from knowing.) We ended the day with a very nice Vietnamese lunch at a restaurant where again the chef made menu substitutions for us. We had two very nice days in Sapa and would highly recommend Me and this trip for those who are comfortable hikers.

The trip was poorly organised. We did not do any meaningful stops on our way there nor back. We only stopped at a overpriced highway coffee shop. When arriving at the hotel there was a lot of confusion around us having booked a home stay. The trekking guide was not really a guide, she basically pointed out the obvious e.g. here is a rice field and here is a village.

    Not good organized

  • 03-Feb-2016

The tour was not good organized. There was no good communication towards me and I had to call the local contact person several times because things went wrong. For example, first of all I got picked up 45 minutes later than the initial pick up time. Moreover, my name was not on the list for the several exurcions during these two days. Additionally, my name was not on the list for the bus going back to Hanoi, so after several calls I luckly got a seat in the bus.
