Itinerary:

Day 1: Cape Town — Klein Karoo

Begin your two-day adventure in the Western Cape with a drive from Cape Town in a luxury minibus. Your journey today will begin as you leave the silhouette of Table Mountain behind and trade it for the lush green scenery of the Garden Route. You’ll soon understand where this forested paradise area gets its name from, and why it is one of the most loved areas in the country.

On your first stop of the day, spot some of Africa’s wild animals from the back of an open 4x4 vehicle in Botlierskop, a malaria-free private game reserve near Mosselbay. Search for giraffe, white rhino, kudu, lion, elephant, zebra and wildebeest, to name a few. This scenic drive takes roughly 1 to 2 hours, during which there will be numerous stops to stretch, snap photos and get something to eat.

Just when you thought your bush experience couldn’t get any better, you’ll hop off your safari vehicle for an up close and personal encounter with nature on a 30-minute tranquil bush walking safari, following your field game ranger as you track wildlife through the coastal renosterveldt and Cape fynbos.

The scenery during the next 50 miles changes dramatically from green to dusty dull greys as you reach the relatively arid region of the Klein Karoo and the ostrich capital of the world, Oudtshoorn.

Then enjoy an evening of free time in Oudtshoorn, where you can relax in your accommodation for an optional traditional ‘braai’ (barbeque) dinner (own expense) or explore the town’s dining and nightlife options.

Choose to overnight at one of the following: 4-Star Buffelsdrift Game Reserve or similar or 3-Star Yamkela Guest House or budget Backpackers Paradise accommodation in Oudtshoorn.

Day 2: Klein Karoo — Cape Town (B)

After breakfast, jump straight into the thick of the Klein Karoo bush this morning as you set out on an open topped 2-hour 4x4 safari drive to seek out more of Africa’s Big Five –rhinos, Cape buffaloes and African elephants at Buffelsdrift Private Game Reserve. Your expert guide and ranger will help spot wildlife, and in addition to some of the ‘Big Five’ you may see zebras, wildebeests, giraffes - just to name a few.

Those seeking a meaningful nature experience can join rangers on an optional Elephant Bush Walk to have the opportunity to walk alongside three rescued elephants in their natural environment (own expense). Learn about these gentle giants, under the watchful eye of the elephant guides you’ll stroll with these impressive creatures – easily the largest land mammals on earth.

End off a seemingly perfect day with a drive along Route 62, the longest wine route in the world! Capture the beauty of high mountains, twisting passes, rugged Karoo plains during this 3 to 4 hour journey before arriving in Cape Town by late evening.

  • The challenge is that this trip brought us to zoo-type attractions - really not a wildlife experience. Depending on where you live, you may have similar experiences available at home. If you want to go on safari in Africa - do that instead. That said, the highlight was the elephant interaction. Loved that!

A lot of driving, scenery okay but not fabulous.

Several missed opportunities - I stayed at the top level lodge. We arrived there at 7 but the hippos come out to graze at 6:30 so I missed them.

  • Although I loved seeing the animals, there were a few things about this tour that frustrated me. First of all, it is advertised that the safari is a BIG FIVE game drive. This was not true our safari guide at Botlierskop told us that they do NOT have the big five no leopards at their reserve. I didn't really care about the leopard, so I wasn't disappointed, but they advertised the big five and our safari was not that. The other thing I didn't like was that they took us to Buffelsdrift for the elephant experience which is not included in the fee mind you, the elephant encounter was my favorite part of our vacation getting hugs from the elephants was memorable, but the fact that you had to pay separately or sit there for over an hour and do nothing seemed ridiculous. I don't know why it's not just included in the price. I liked the experience, but it did not meet my expectations.

  • Not a safari, more like a zoo. The best part of this tour is walking with the elephants, which is an extra cost.

  • The itinerary is efficient. Love the accommodation. Helpful tour guide.

  • Great way to get out of Cape Town for the weekend. Not impressed with the night at the Turnberry Hotel which is apperantly a 4 star hotel more leaning towards 2 stars.

  • We were able to see the big 5 animals. We were so close to all the animals. The elephant walk was incredible. Feeding the elephants and having an elephant give you a hug was incredible! This was worth the money.

  • We had a great time, with nice up close views of the animals. Our driver, Maurtie was extraordinary, he made a long ride fun and enjoyable, can't say enough good about him. The extra elephant feeding is a must, nothing like it!

  • I'm very conflicted about the rating I've given for this tour. While it is definitely worth doing as there are incredible highlights, there's just enough errant incidents during our tour that has left us with a sour note. First the good... we definitely loved the lion walk, which by the way wasn't even listed in the itinerary here. We also loved the elephant ride as well as the ostrich farm.

Now for the not so good. The game drive was just alright. It felt very artificial.... like a ginormous zoo. Yes, we've seen rhinos, elephants, giraffes. However, there were so limited number of them that we felt like they were placed there just for this reason. It didn't feel like they were really in the wild, very unlike the scenes you see on other safaris where there's a herd of elephants in all stages of life crossing the river, a herd of giraffes crossing the path of the vehicle, lions getting real close to the vehicle, etc. There was supposedly a lion that was pointed out to us that I never saw because we were so far away from it. The hippo was submerged in the water other than maybe a few indistinguishable inches of it's head poking out of the water. There were 2 lonely giraffes by the trees. The Cango wildlife ranch also felt just like any other zoo you'd see at home.

What really disappointed and more than a little peeved us was the whole vibe of the tour. There were 2 vans that went on this tour. One van had the tourists who chose to stay at the 3 or 4 star accommodations while the other van had the ones staying at the backpackers. We unfortunately were grouped with a gaggle of 23 year old German girls staying at the backpackers. We were the only ones on that van not staying at the backpackers. Worse, we were brought to the backpackers place for so called dinner. What's the sense in paying for a 3 star accommodation when you're eating at the backpackers? The experience would've been much better if the company grouped the tourists accordingly.

  • Well what can I say - this tour was the best thing I have ever done.

I visited South Africa for five days with work and decided to spend the three nights i had to myself in Cape Town. First of all - the most amazing city I have ever visited !

I was picked up on time and after picking up the other people, we set off along the beautifully scenic garden route stopping off to do a 4x4 safari for a couple of hours and then do a lion walk. The lion walk was the highlight of the tour. Walking with the kings of the jungle is just something I will never forget.

An overnight stop in Oudtshoorn pronounced 'oates-urgh-in' in a comfortable family run b and b was done then the ostrich farm, elephant ride amazing also and then the wildlife ranch followed before arriving back at my hotel for 6.30pm.

Everything mentioned in the itinary was done and for the price, is something i would recommend to everyone. Truly unforgettable and a great way to see the sights outside of the city which are breath taking.

Finally, a special mention to the tour guide Andrew. A top bloke who made sure everyone was ok. Didn't intervene and allowed people to get on with what they wanted to do. I was on my own and he made me feel very welcome. Deserved the big tip I gave him. If you read this mate, again, it was awesome to meet you.

  • tour guide was good. got to see soooooo many animals. rode an elephant, walked with lions and touched cheetahs. best part of my trip!
