Tour Details

Located in northeastern Costa Rica, Tortuguero National Park abuts the small village of Tortuguero, which is only accessible by boat or plane. Many visitors stay nearby at Pachira Lodge where they can tour the park and have a good chance of seeing species like the Capuchin monkey while on a canopy tour or kayak outing.Named after the Spanish word tortuga, meaning turtle, the main attraction in Tortuguero, Costa Rica is the endangered green sea turtles, who come to nest in the black volcanic sands of the parks 11 miles of protected beach from July to September each year. Seeing the hundreds of behemoth mothers, who can weigh up 700 pounds, haul themselves ashore to dig nests and lay eggs is an experience probably only surpassed by the sight of countless inch-long baby turtles clumsily making their way to the sea two months later.

  • I've just got back from this amazing short trip and would highly recommend it. I was picked up in San Jose and transferred by bus to Tortuguero National Park where I stayed at Pichura Lodge which is amazing. To get to Pichura Lodge, it is an hour by boat through the canals which was great even though it was raining heavily. There are 3 activities included which was a boat ride through the canals to spot wild animals we saw monkeys, caimens and lots of turtles, there was a walking trip through the forest and and a trip to Tortuguero village. On the last morning there was 2 monkeys playing outside my room, it was fabulous. The guide that was with us throughout the trip, Julio, was very knowledgeable and professional and was available at all times and did me a massive favour by locating my bag which I had accidentally left at the port amidst all the chaos due to torrential rain and many people being there catching different boats, I really can't thank him enough. Overall it was an excellent trip.

Only thing I would say is to take some snacks with you as there is nothing to eat between meals and you can get very hungry

  • This tour was one of the best organized tour we have been on in Central America!!! From being picked up and dropped off at our hotel in San Jose, to the beautiful accommodations and food service, the knowledgeable guides, the national park transportation, and the wildlife everything was top rate.
