Know More about this tour

Cruise on a modern 60 feet catamaran, perfect for viewing the natural wonders of Akaroa Harbour. The vessel is the largest and most luxurious on the harbour. There's lots of space on the 2 decks for unenterrupted viewing and inside seating.

The 2-hour cruise is fully narrated by your skipper who has extensive knowledge of the nature, wildlife and history of Akaria Harbour.

On the two-hour cruise you will encounter wildlife plus the many sea caves and volcanic cliffs. As Akaroa Harbour was a live volcano nine million years ago, there is many spectacular ancient lava flows to be seen. One cliff has a sheer 500-foot face and has a fascinating history plus you will also see the incredible Scenery Nook, an amazing pink, purple and red volcanic amphitheater that will take your breath away.

Catch glimpses of the White Flippered Blue Penguin, the smallest penguin in the world you'll also see the New Zealand Fur Seal sunning themselves on the harbors rocks near the entrance at Seal Bay.

The highlight of this trip is undoubtedly the sighting of one of the world's smallest and rarest dolphins, the Hector Dolphin also known as the New Zealand Dolphin. These friendly and inquisitive mammals meet the boat most days throughout the year and their calves can be seen between October and March.

Such a great way to spend an afternoon on the water! It was a pretty blustery day, but the cruise was still nice and smooth. We saw several pods of Hector's dolphins, getting close enough to hear the unique puffing of the little creatures. We also spotted some very lively fur seals playing in the water. The crew were very knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommend!

The weather gods were not so good to us the afternoon we went out - quite windy and choppy at the top of the harbour. We only saw two hector's dolphins on this trip, but saw seals, penguins, bird life, sheep on the hills...beautiful out on the bay with the blue water and green cliffs. The commentary throughout was informative and the crew looked after us really well. We were lucky enough to score a re-cruise voucher for next time - we'll definitely be back.

This tour was excellent. Firstly we got a 20% discount, no idea why but thanks Sonia. The boat itself was really good and passengers were free to go anywhere. The crew were helpful and informative and we were impressed with their effort in using and pronouncing Te Reo effectively. True to their word we encountered albatross, seals, penguins and Hectors dolphins. This was time in the gorgeous Akaroa well spent.

Despite it being winter we still had a wonderful experience. Saw seals, a penguin and a wee pod of dolphins. The scenery is amazing. Well worth the trip.

The crew were amazing and friendly, informative commentary thought out the cruise. Spotted a couple of hector dolphins which was exciting, some baby seals and some extremely adventurous sheep gracing on the sheer cliffs Highly recommend Fun day out in akaroa

Unfortunately trip was cancelled due to weather conditions 😒. Owners promised to refund my money, which didn't happen yet.

A great couple of hours of entertainment and relaxation with a bit of an education thrown in as well. We were extremely saddened to learn of the passing of the skipper of our vessel just a few days after our visit.

Excellent cruise, such a thrill. We are so thankful to the captain and the hostess; she was so kind and helpful. It was quite and informative and wonderful cruise that we thoroughly enjoyed.

This trip was amazing , perfect calm day, with the brightest most beautiful colour water in the world, we saw a pod of bottle nose dolphins that played for us for over an hr. Even the staff were in awe . They were jumping out of the water, splashing us.

  • 03-Dec-2021

It was a cloudy grey day but there were so many little Hector dolphins all around us for much of the trip, we didn't even notice the weather. This is a must do experience! An interesting and informative commentary about the geological/volcanic history of the harbour formation and other wildlife including several Little Blue Penguins that we sighted who were hunting at the time.
