Overview

The Albertina is home to one of the world's largest and most valuable collections of graphic art. This collection, founded in 1776 by Prince Albert of Saxe-Teschen, now includes ca. 65,000 drawings and around one million printed graphic works on paper from all the major artistic periods from late Gothic to contemporary: from Drer and Michelangelo to Rubens and Rembrandt, and from Klimt, Schiele, and Monet to Picasso, Warhol, and Kiefer.

The Albertina not only has the largest and most valuable graphical collections in the world, with works such as Drers Hare and Klimt's studies of women. Its latest exhibition collection presents masterpieces of the Modern, spanning Monet to Picasso and Baselitz. As the largest Habsburg residential palace, the Albertina dominates the southern tip of the Imperial Palace on one of the last remaining fortress walls in Vienna.
Since it reopened in 2003, the Albertina has presented an impressive number of exhibitions, showing foremost works of art dating from the 15th century to the present day. With its special Albrecht Drer, Picasso and Van Gogh exhibitions, the Albertina has drawn a record number of visitors during the past few years. The Albertina is one of Austrias most popular museums, making it a major attraction for city visitors and cultural travelers from all over the world.
It is much less known, that the Albertina is the fist Austrian art institution to systematically collect contemporary and historic photography.There is a focus on architecture, too!
