Overview

Behold historical Alexandria, Egypts second-largest city on this full-day tour from Cairo. Travel to this beautiful Mediterranean coastal city, founded by Alexander the Great in 312 BC, to learn more about how it served as Egypts capital for nearly 1,000 years. Explore the spooky Roman catacombs of Kom ash-Shuqqafa; see medieval Fort Qaitbey where Alexandrias fabled lighthouse once stood; and marvel at the new Alexandria Library, a disc-shaped wonder that honors the ancient library. Lastly, visit the National Museum, where Greek, Roman and medieval displays chart the citys tumultuous past.

Are you ready for an awe-inspiring day? Then let's get to it! Alexandria is one of the world's most impressive historical cities, and certainly a must-see in Egypt, so if you're thinking about doing this day tour from Cairo...what are you waiting for?! It'll take us about a three hour drive from Cairo before our day tour of Alexandria will truly begin, and where better to kick it off than the Catacombs of Kom Ash-Suqqafa. One of the world's largest Roman burial sites, the Catacombs are one of Alexandria's most popular attractions. Watch your head as you descend into a network of underground passages, tombs, and antechambers via aspiral staircase over a three-level labyrinth (seriously cool, isn't it?!).Dozens of chambers with sculpted pillars and statues await your curiosity, as well as a large Roman-style banquet room, where relatives of the deceased traditionally hosted memorial meals. Our next stop is the National Museum, home to Greek and Roman era masterpiece ruins discovered under the water on the shores of Alexandria. Super impressive old stuff right here!We will enjoy an Egyptian local lunch , Alexandria is famous for its fresh sea food (vegetarian and other dietaries will be accommodated). After lunch we will head to the former site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. Although the lighthouse is no longer standing, atop its ruins lie the Citadel of Qaitbay, a defensive fortress built in the 15th century. Designed as a defence along the Mediterranean coastline, the Citadel offers extensive views, fresh Mediterranean air, and a supreme sense of historical significance. Our final stop in Alexandria day tour will be the Alexandria Library. Nerd time! Inspired by the original great library of Alexandria, the modern library was built to hold over eight million books. Built between 1995 and 2002, it covers 11 cascading levels and although it has not yet reached its capacity, it's an impressive homage to the ancient splendour of Alexandria. Pick your jaws up off the ground and explore! As one of Egypt’s most historically significant cities, Alexandria really is a must-see for history and culture buffs. We have no doubt it will leave you enriched, impressed, and perhaps a little awe-struck.Following recent safety incidents we recommend that you check your government's advice for their latest information on travelling in Egypt before your departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all areas of your itinerary.

We enjoyed very much our Alexandria Day tour! Our guide Miss Marwa was very knowledgeable, kind, smiley and funny and a very nice company to have for the whole day! We were taken to all the places as promised (despite the crazy traffic!) and had a lovely lunch on a restaurant just on the sea front on the Alexandria Cornish. The van was comfortable and the driver polite. We most certainly recommend this to anyone! We will be using this company again next time we are in Egypt.

Great tour with Noha. She was well versed in Egyptian history and her English was excellent. We enjoyed all the activities including lunch.

Alexandria wasn't on the itinerary for my main Egypt tour, so I went on the Urban Adventure with Mohammed a day later. I ended up being the only person on the tour. Mohammed was both knowledgeable and professional, and was friendly enough that at times it felt more like having a friend show me around rather than a booked programme. Mohammed made sure all of my objectives were met, and the city itself exceeded my expectations. I thoroughly recommend going on this tour, and having nothing but praise for Mohammed.

Amazing tour. Our tour guide very intelligent and very kind, with an excellent English and always looking for our safety and interests. Highly recommendable

Our guide Loay ahmed, has very good knowledge on the places we visited, very helpful with being able to show us around the places as well as allowing plenty of time to have a look around each place, like the catacombs ourselves and able to take photos once everything about the area was explained.

I was the only person on this tour which was very much in my favour. Loay Ahmed was my guide for the day. He was full of knowledge and information which helped pass the 2 hour drive to Alexandria. Loay made sure I had express entry into all the sights, negotiating the entry lines with efficiency. He balanced guiding and free time well. It is a big day but a day trip is all you need in Alexandria. I highly recommend Urban Adventures and Loay.

Great day and tour of Alexandria with Mohmed O. You can tell that he really loves his job as any question I posed throughout the day was met with bright eyes and a big smile. The 2.5 drive to Alexandria was easy with a restroom break about 1/2 way. The day goes by quickly with a first stop to the catacombs then to the library, lunch and finally the fortress. Perfect tour for anyone needing the highlights covered in 1 day. I would recommend this tour and would do it again.

The drive was long be prepared. It took 2 1/2hrs to get Alexandria. We stopped half way for snacks and toilet. When we arrived in Alexandria our first stop was the Catacombs. Our guide, Mohammed, was very knowledgeable and patient. He answered all our questions and accommodated any requests we made for pictures. The Catacombs were very interesting. Be careful walking down the winding steps the lighting is not so good. Once you get down there you will find some amazing remnants of the past. Next was the library of Alexandria. I wished we had more time. The tour allows for an hour in the Library. Forty minutes of that hour was an English speaking guided tour. Then you are free to roam for 20mins. I recommend buying a separate ticket to enter the Rare Books & Manuscripts room. This is not included with your tour. Once you enter the Rare Book & Manuscript be sure to ask the attendant for a 10min tour. It is well worth it. After the Library we had a very picturesque lunch at a restaurant on the water. The breeze was very soothing. If you are not adventurous then I would say you should order the chicken. Try not to over eat because the The Citadel at Qibay will require climbing some stairs to get some amazing pictures of the Mediterranean Sea. All in all this was a very good tour. Make sure you request Muhommed.

Terrific day trip from Cairo to Alexandria. Mohammed was a wonderful guide. He was enthusiastic and very informed on the different sites we visited. The catacombs, the library and citadel are all worth seeing. We had a delicious fresh fish lunch at a restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

We booked this tour as we have previously used Urban Adventures elsewhere with great success and also as it was more cost effective than similar tours we saw advertised. We were very fortunate to have Mohamed Osama as our guide- Mohamed was incredibly knowledgeable and able to answer pretty much every question we threw at him. He was also exceptionally talented at being able to present what is a lot of information (thousands of years of history) in a fun and interesting way. Despite this tour being cheaper than the others, it didn't feel that we missed out on anything. We saw (and went into) the library, catacombs and citadel and had a driving tour the other main sites. We also stopped for lunch at a seafood restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean. The main difference between this tour and the other more expensive ones (as far as I can tell anyway) is that it didn't include lunch or transfers, but the lunch spot was great value anyway. Mohamed and our driver went the extra mile to make sure we had the best experience possible.
