Our driver, Achillea (I probably spelled that wrong) was waiting for the 4 of us at the pier when we got off our ship at 7:30 a.m. He was great! On the hour long ride from the port of Civitavecchia to downtown Rome, he explained the "plan" for our day. When we reached downtown Rome he took us past a number of extra sights (not listed in the tour description), explaining them to us as he drove. He made brief stops at the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and Navona Square, and waited while we got out and took pictures.
Then we picked up our excellent guide, Antonella. She did a wonderful job of ushering us around Vatican City, pointing out and explaining things as we went along. She was very knowledgeable and informative - and great at navigating us through things to insure we saw as much as possible in our short time there. We learned and saw a lot - including St. Peter's Basilica, Michelangelo's Pieta, Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel. (But it never felt like we were being rushed.)
After our morning at the Vatican, Achillea picked us up and we were taken to a nice restaurant for a lovely lunch. (Not just the slice of pizza we were expecting from the tour description.)
Then we were off to the Coliseum and Forum for the afternoon. Once again, Achillea and Antonella did their magic - and we saw and learned so much. Very educational.
We said goodbye to Antonella and drove back to our cruise ship, arriving just in time for dinner. This was an informative, enjoyable, and worthwhile tour. We could never have seen and experienced this much of Rome in a day on our own, or on a large group tour.
This is the perfect way to see the highlights of Rome in just one day. Well worth the money. If you do this tour, I highly recommend our driver (Achillea) and our guide (Antonella). They turned a great tour into an exceptional one.
