Overview

The Arty Footsteps Experience is a unique opportunity to walk, explore and draw in the Breamish Valley in Northumberland National Park. The idea behind the Experience, is to encourage the traveller to slow down and take some time to stand and stare at the landscape around them. By slowing down, you can use that time to observe in a way that an artist observes and the creativity naturally follows on. To help you draw, we provide the artist's materials you will need. To nourish you, we bring you a picnic, made up from local Northumberland produce. To nourish your soul, we share the beautiful Breamish Valley with you as we walk beside its river and explore the valley through which it flows. Jane, our artist and Patrick our guide will be with you for the whole Experience. Ingram Village Hall is our indoor base for the day if it is needed, a safe haven on a rainy day. Otherwise, the great outdoors will be our home, as you our guest walk, explore and draw on our Arty Footsteps Experience.

Know More about this tour

Itinerary
The activity offers travellers the opportunity to explore and draw in the Breamish Valley, in the north of Northumberland National Park. The valley has a beautiful river, big sky views and a wealth of prehistoric features, including a fine Iron Age Hill Fort at Brough Law, just one of many in the area. The aim for the traveller is to look for the details in the landscape, to take the time to stand and stare and to draw what they see. The activity includes an option for some easy walking up to the hill fort, but the area is diverse enough to meet the needs of people, whatever their ability or fitness level. Each traveller gets a pack of drawing materials to keep; this includes a sketch pad and a set of drawing pencils. Your guide Patrick will look after you and point out the valley's features and wildlife, and Jane, a wildlife artist is there to guide your hand as you capture what you see all around you on your sketchpad. The activity is designed to take place outdoors, whatever the weather, but if we do get driven indoors, we have Ingram Village Hall as a safe haven to ensure the Experience can go ahead. Add in a picnic lunch made up from local produce and you have the perfect day.

Six of us, all old men, did the Pilgrim's Way walk to Holy Island. Although the walk itself is an amazing experience, it was enhanced by the enthusiasm and knowledge of our guide, Patrick, whose breadth of knowledge covered not only the Anglo Saxon history of the island, but also the natural habitat and flora and fauna of the area.

A dawn walk to Holy Island. Absolutely unforgettable, unique experience, if you do nothing else, do this. The distant call of thousands of seals( like lost souls) the utter peace in a normally busy place, the knowledge of the friendly guide, a nice group, the feel of the sea bed on bare feet(not as cold as I thought) , the samphyr forest, unusual birds... . Worth a very long detour indeed to get here.

This was a fabulous day out in the National Park. Patrick is an excellent guide; personable and knowledgeable. I would definitely join another Footsteps walk. Great value! Highly recommended!

Northumberland National Park was our first walk with this group. Patrick was very welcoming and put us at ease very quickly. He is very pleasant company and knowledgeable too. He pointed out many interesting features, birds, wildlife, plants etc. as we walked, without 'overdoing it'. We were also able to explore areas a little 'off-piste' since he knows the terrain so well. The walk distance was exactly right for me, and as described. We will definitely walk with Footsteps again. Price wise, it's a bargain and an experience not to be missed.
