The Trevi Fountain is the largest and most famous Baroque fountain in Rome.
There has been a version of the Pantheon standing on this spot for over 2000 years. The originaltemple was built in 27 B.C. by Marcus Agrippa, the same general who built the Aqua Virgo aqueduct.
In the 1st century A.D., this was the site of the CircusAgonalis, or competition arena. Built byEmperor Domitian for sporting events and chariot races, the arena was even larger then theColosseum. The name “Agonalis” is believed to have changed to “N’agona” over the years, andeventually to present-day “Navona.”
In addition to containing the ruins of four ancient temples, this sacred area is also the site of one ofhistory’s most notorious assassinations.
Its full name is “The Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus,” but it is most commonly called simply“Gesù.”
The trapezoidal plaza, knownas the Campidoglio, was designed by Michelangelo in the mid-1500s,but the hill’s history dates back to Ancient Rome.
