OverviewThis is the best place to see wildlife in the northern region of Costa Rica, but what makes this area so especial to observe wildlife? Cao Negro are protected wetlands not only by the government of Costa Rica there are non-governmental ORGs like RAMSAR giving it a category as one of the most important wetlands in the world, thats because this aquatic ecosystem is home of many endangered species such like the garfish, spider monkey, the tapir, the jaguar the Jabiru. Also it is one of the favorite wetlands for all aquatic migratory birds like ducks, egrets, herons and raptors.
Cao Negro its 2hrs from La Fortuna once we get to town we make a short walk to get to the boat that will take us over the float land when we are able to point all diverse animals where monkeys, caimans, Jesus Christ lizards and many birds species are easy to watch, Cao Negro its fill or surprises. This is a great tour for nature lovers, birders or customers who want to avoid long or hard hikes
Know More about this tour
The Rio Frio is the main water source for the lake area and the largest flowing river in the Arenal region. During the dry season, the water recedes, leaving only the Rio Frios main channel, and during this time visitors can typically spot neotropic cormorants, glossy ibises, wood storks, green-backed herons, blue-winged teals, black-bellied whistling ducks and more. For avid bird watchers, Cao Negro is one of the prime spots to see the Nicaraguan grackle or the endangered Jabirus, the largest bird found in Central America. Fishing is allowed on the Rio Frio from July 1 through March 31, and licenses are available through the ranger station in the village.
Some of the more commonly spotted species include howler, spider and white-faced monkeys, three-toed sloths, turtles and even Jesus Christ lizards. Keep your eyes peeled on the water, as a number of visitors have reported seeing the fin of a freshwater shark.
