Know More about this tour

The recent eruptions of Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii Volcano National Park have captured the world's imagination. Kilauea tours feature the closest approach to recent lava flows allowed by Civil Defense and local authorities.

You'll explore Hawaii Volcano National Park, Thurston Lava Tube and Kilauea Volcano, and visit the Jaggar Museum. If conditions are deemed safe by the National Park Service, you'll also have the opportunity to hike out onto the lava flow.

This Big Island Hawaii Volcano tour also takes you through Hilo Town and Banyan Drive, the waterfalls at Rainbow Falls (if time permits), a macadamia nut factory (seasonal), and an orchid and anthurium nursery.

Important note:
Please read the following cautionary comments before selecting this tour:

When lava enters the ocean, the intense heat produces a plume cloud with dangerous and potentially life threatening toxic gases, super heated steam, and hydrochloric acid. Airborne particles are a hazard to your eyes and lungs. Watch for shifting winds that can blow acid mist clouds over you. Leave the area at once.

Where lava enters the ocean the coastline is extended. This new surface is unstable and may collapse at any time without warning. Do not approach areas where lava is entering the ocean.

Sharp lava cracks and holes, loose rock, and thin crust greatly increase your risk of getting hurt. Falling on lava can result in nasty wounds. Wear sturdy walking shoes. Use sunscreen, wear a hat, and drink plenty of fluids.

If inland flows are present, and you use caution, you may have an opportunity to view fresh lava close up. Follow marked routes and your guides instructions. Molten lava is 2000 degrees F, so keep a safe distance and never go into areas where your escape route may be cut off. Do not throw objects into lava as this can cause burns from spattering lava or eye injuries from airborne volcanic glass fragments. BE AWARE, STAY ALERT, AND USE CAUTION AT ALL TIMES, DO NOT TAKE CHANCES.

Special Needs requests must be called in to the local supplier AT LEAST 1 week prior to tour date.  All special needs requests are handled and accommodated on a situational basis.

This was by far the WORST and I mean the WORST tour I've ever taken! To begin with, there's no such thing as a Volcano Tour here, period! Ever since Kilauea decided to erupt back in April, this tour should have been canceled--or else, call it a different name--period! The tour did not take us anywhere near the volcano, of course. Instead, they took us on a really long and boring tour around Hilo and some other natural attractions i.e., water falls, and a black sand beach. Other than that, all you see is the exiting town of Hilo, a nice Japanese park in Hilo too and have lunch at the Hilo mall. They also had to stop for some other people at the airport--the ones who actually booked a helicopter lava tour?. Of course, we had to wait for them sitting on a bus for I don't know how long. What bothers me the most about this tour is that even when they knew the Volcano National Park and Jaeger Museum had been closed for quite some time, they didn't even bother to contact me to let me know about the modifications they did to the tour--which, like I mentioned, had nothing to do with volcanoes at all. Instead, they just changed the scheduled altogether and that was that. I had to actually contact them directly to find out about the status of this tour. They person who picked up the phone sounded like a clueless high school kid with absolutely no knowledge of the services her company was offering (not Viator, by the way). The only redeemable feature of this tour was our guide Leroy, who was super nice and professional. He was able to tell us many interesting stories about Hawaii, which were very enlightening and entertaining. My daughter and I ended up taking a Lava Tour on a boat instead with a different local provider. That was a really an unforgettable experience. So... bottom line, if you want to do something, anything remotely related to volcanoes, this tour AS OF NOW is definitely not for you.

I absolutely loved the tour. I'd strongly recommend it for anyone looking for a fun and informative day tour from Hilo. The tour guide was informative and entertaining and we were lucky enough to be able to view some volcanic actions from Halemaumau after the fog had lifted. I can't wait to return to Big Island and take the tour again.

Wonderful tour, I highly recommend it. Captain Rob clearly loves Hawaii and is extremely knowledgable in all aspects of volcanology. Fascinating and informative.

Ce tour est vraiment bien pour ce qui est du qualité-prix. Avec un guide formidable et amicale, nous avons fait le tour du National volcano park , en passant par tout les attraits populaires. Un tour à recommander !!

Captain Bob was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable of all facets of the volcano's. It was a long day but very much worth the time. We were picked up at the scheduled time. I would have given this a 5 star rating if just for Captain Bob, however, the tour does stop at the Volcano Inn for lunch. Several points - food selection was poor though quality was above average but More importantly there are several levels unbeknownst to us of service and food selection. Even though we were seated first we were put in the back row of tables away from upfront and the best view seating, people with Gold passes were seated after us and given the best seating, we were waited on after the Gold passes were served - again, even though we were seated first. The Gold passes had a much larger and appealing meal
selection. Everybody on the same tour bus should be provided the same level of service. If there are levels to purchase preferential viewing and meals, then it should be made available through all selling venues on this tour. This tour should consider other restaurant options.

It was great, the tour guide was very friendly and it had a great athmosphere, although I expected to see the lava flows from a closer perspective.

Very good tour of Hilo, local highlights macadamia nut factory, orchid producers and the Volcano national park. The guide was very affable and full of local knowledge. Please note that conditions can be wet, cool and windy when in the park. Take a light jacket with you. Quite a long day, starting at 8 am and getting back to our hotel after 7 pm. Overall, very good value and I suspect this tour takes you as close as you can get to a volcano without a helicopter.
