Know More about this tour

Choose from a morning of afternoon departure, then make your way to the tourist office in Piazza Maggiore, which is situated in the heart of Bologna Old Town. After introductions, pop in your headphones (if your group consists of eight people or more) to ensure you can hear the live narration, and set off on foot with your guide.

Bologna is the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region in Northern Italy. Italians have several nicknames for the handsome city, one of which is La Rossa meaning The Red.' This nickname is partly due to the dominant red hue of the citys buildings and faades.

Before leaving Piazza Maggiore, admire the 16th-century Fontana del Nettuno, which depicts the sea god Neptune in all his muscly glory. Make your way to the nearby Basilica di San Petronio, a superb example of Gothic architecture. Listen as your guide talks you through its standout features including a large sundial on the interior floor, and several unfinished details on the faade.

Continue on foot toward Piazza della Mercanzia and stroll around the narrow streets surrounding the square, where rows of vendors hawk local food products. As you browse the quality produce, it will soon become clear why Bologna is frequently cited as one of Italys top food cities.

Next, arrive at the courtyard of the Archiginnasio, the former seat of the University of Bologna. The university, which is Europes oldest, dates back to the 11th century.

After hearing about Bolognas scholarly past, stop into the Church of Santa Maria della Vita to admire a monumental group of life-size Baroque terracotta sculptures. The work depicts several figures mourning over the dead Christ.

Lastly, cast your eyes skyward to view the leaning Asinelli and Garisenda towers. Commonly known as the Two Towers (Due Torri), they are Bolognas most conspicuous landmarks. Yout tour then concludes at this location.

  • The woman who led this tour did an excellent job, I just wasn't that interested in all that history. I'm good for about a half hour of history and after that that am ready to move on. Did a Rick Steves Tour of Sicly a couple of years ago, which was totally fabulous but sometimes over two hours of history at a time. Yuck! So I window shopped on this tour and left early. Did get to see some interesting places but I could do it with a map in a lot less time. The anatomy theater gave me the creeps, probably because I took anatomy in college and though I enjoyed it I still remember how my hands got numb after of many hours in formaldehyde and the smell. Sorry, not my cup of tea. Too large a group.

  • Unfortunately we did not enjoy this tour. Although the tour guide was knowledgeable, we could not hear her most of the time. I would recommend better earphones. Also this is advertised as an English tour, but she had to translate in Italian the whole time, as it was a mixed group. The group was also much too big. I would recommend not bigger than 20 people. I think our group was about 40 people!

  • Just ok. Nothing to write home about. Too disjointed. Would not recommend.

  • You let me down. You couldn't get hold of your tour guide and so there was no communication back to me. My booking remained Unconfirmed for a long period. I eventually booked elsewhere.

  • A well constructed tour covering the main sights of the city. A busy tour, there were lots of us, so we used the audio to hear the comments.Native guide's English was very clear. Gave us a good introduction to the city.

  • Very good, great tourguide!

  • The tour helped us get oriented to a wonderful city but was marred by very poor audio equipment and the time-consuming process of a dual language guide: Italian speakers had to wait through the guides English remarks and vice-versa for the English speakers. Very tedious!

  • The guide had a real passion for the architecture of the city but it felt like he got lost in too many details. It all felt a bit slow. Also he explains everythign twice, once in English and then the same thing again in Italian. When we left the historic operatiing theatre, he didn't wait for the whole group and as a result he lost us about a quarte rof teh group and we spend 20 min trying to find the rest of the group. That was unfortunate.
I personally would not book this tour again.

  • A good intro to most significant areas and sites in the old centre of Bologna and not too long. Quality of audio guide could have been better.

  • Great intro to the buildings, history and areas of Bologna's old city. Quality of audio could be improved.
