Know More about this tour

Choose from a morning of afternoon departure, then make your way to the tourist office in Piazza Maggiore, which is situated in the heart of Bologna Old Town. After introductions, pop in your headphones (if your group consists of eight people or more) to ensure you can hear the live narration, and set off on foot with your guide.

Bologna is the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region in Northern Italy. Italians have several nicknames for the handsome city, one of which is ‘La Rossa’ meaning ‘The Red.' This nickname is partly due to the dominant red hue of the city’s buildings and façades.

Before leaving Piazza Maggiore, admire the 16th-century Fontana del Nettuno, which depicts the sea god Neptune in all his muscly glory. Make your way to the nearby Basilica di San Petronio, a superb example of Gothic architecture. Listen as your guide talks you through its standout features including a large sundial on the interior floor, and several unfinished details on the façade.

Continue on foot toward Piazza della Mercanzia and stroll around the narrow streets surrounding the square, where rows of vendors hawk local food products. As you browse the quality produce, it will soon become clear why Bologna is frequently cited as one of Italy’s top food cities.

Next, arrive at the courtyard of the Archiginnasio, the former seat of the University of Bologna. The university, which is Europe’s oldest, dates back to the 11th century.

After hearing about Bologna’s scholarly past, stop into the Church of Santa Maria della Vita to admire a monumental group of life-size Baroque terracotta sculptures. The work depicts several figures mourning over the dead Christ.

Lastly, cast your eyes skyward to view the leaning Asinelli and Garisenda towers. Commonly known as the Two Towers (Due Torri), they are Bologna’s most conspicuous landmarks. Yout tour then concludes at this location.

  • A really nice summary of the history and related buildings in Bologna. Well worth the tie and the cost.

  • I was under the impression that this was an english speaking tour, there were two of the women in our group who spoke only Italian so the guide did the tour in both English and Italian. She was very rushed and kept telling us that we didn't have enough time to complete the tour route due to the time of day that the tour started. We were rushed through every place and she spoke at warp speed to tell us everything in English and then repeat it all in Italian. It was a very frustrating experience and I found myself wishing the tour would be over after the first 15 minutes. It was impossible to interact or ask questions as she didn't quit talking long enough for any interactions. It was not a tour experience I would recommend or repeat although I do believe there was much to see and talk about in Bologna just wish our tour was better.

  • This was disappointing. Our group of four were expecting a walking tour which would give us a good introduction to the major sights and geography of Bologna. We were also expecting it to be conducted in English throughout.
Instead the guide spoke in both Italian and English to the group of about 25, so that half the time we were left standing about, not knowing what to look at, and not understanding a word. The pre booking information did not make this clear. The guide was a charming, knowlegable lady , but her English was so heavily accented that it was very difficult to concentrate on her information and some of us lost interest at some sites. We also did not walk around the city as much as we were expecting.
The best bits were the visits to the anatomical theatre, the group of statues in the Cathedral and the Cassini calendar on the floor of a church, although we could not understand her explanation!.

  • Never left the City Center Square area for the entire tour! Saw only 4 things of any interest. Also, tour-quide wasted a lot of time repeating everything he had said to the group to translate into Spanish for just on couple on the tour! This was suppose to be an English Speaking Tour! That's want we paid for, not what we got!

  • Couldn't hear well even with headphones, not very lively and not that many stops.

  • The tour was an interesting overview of some of the main sights in Bologna as well as some of the history. The guide was knowledge and answered all questions. The only issue I had was that the headset was very noisy and in order to hear I had to make sure I was close to the guide.

  • Waste of money. It was supposed to be an English language tour. They didn't have enough guides so it turned into our guide doing the tour in both English and Italian. 3/4 of the tour ended up being Italian. The info he did give in English was hard to understand. Very disappointing.

  • Great value tour, much better than expected even if the guide was late arriving.... Her knowledge and warmth made up for that and so glad I booked this activity. The walk is flat but some stairs are needed to be climbed in one or two of the stops.

  • This was one of the saddest tours I have taken in my life in any city. The tour guide was not fluent in English and should not have had the responsibility of leading 15 tourists from 7 countries. She meant well but....Only her Italian was good and the 6 Italians maybe enjoyed. Her explanations were way off-mark and irrelevant. Her local Italian jokes and anecdotes only the Italians might have understood. Viator cannot take such Guides for an International group. Sorry. Really wanted an insight into Bologna :

  • Don and #39;t waste your time/money. Massive group 35, and dual Italian/English commentary. Very poor audio players.
