Know More about this tour

Meet your guide in Budapest’s Central Market Hall – a legendary landmark that’s more than 100 years old. Loved by locals and visitors alike, the hall is an institution in Budapest, selling specialty produce from all over Hungary. Browse the stalls, sample slices of locally cured salami and sausage, and learn about Budapest’s ever-intriguing food scene.

While still using enough meat to make vegetarians weep, Hungarian cuisine – in Budapest at least – has more to it than meets the eye. Seasonal vegetables play a starring role in many of the capital’s kitchens, and classic dishes like palatschinke (stuffed pancakes) are often filled with ripe cheeses or sauerkraut. Embrace the local love for freshwater fish by sampling specialties in a side-walk café, and then try chocolates from an award-winning chocolate factory in Central Pest.

Wash down the tasty treats with a Hungarian spritzer in a retro café while discussing the different drinks that feature in many Budapest bars. Work off the food with a walk to the city’s historical Jewish quarter (often called Elizabeth Town or district VII) and then stop for photos next to the Great Synagogue, an impressive place of worship tucked away between the neighborhood’s kosher bakeries and cake shops. Sample some of the local Jewish fare and then stroll back toward the center of town.

Cross Andrássy Avenue, an elegant UNESCO World Heritage-listed street, and then finish in an authentic restaurant near St Stephen Cathedral, enjoying your tour’s pièce de résistance: a bowl of hearty Hungarian goulash and dumplings.

  • Had an amazing time with this tour. We got to walk around and see a lot of the city and enjoy the restaurants. There was enough to eat and plenty of rests, and by the end of the tour you've enjoyed the entire trip.
Would recommend to anyone traveling to Budapest.

  • lots of stops, lots of photo opportunities, well worth it.

  • It's always great to eat good food and learn interesting things about the city at the same time. Whenever we travel, we try to take advantage of Viator's food tours and we've never been disappointed.

  • The Budapest Sights and Bites tour was great! The 4 hour walking tour by our guide Monika was fabulous. Wevstarted at the Grand Market, visited several restaurants and were given a historical background about the city and its buildings. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Budapest.

  • This was the best thing we did in Budapest. The guide was great, the food was great, the sights and history were great. It was quite a lot of walking - we were worn out by the end. But totally worth it!

  • Gergo is an exemplary: passionate guide, gastronome and historian. A fine ambassador for Budapest. We tasted so many delicious examples of authentic Budapest food via the various bakers, delicatessens, stall holders, chocolatiers, bar proprietors and restaurateurs we could not eat for the rest of the day! His perceptive attention to detail meant every participants needs were satisfied. His advice included further restaurant, bar and market locations, which allowed us to fine dine, drink and buy authentic souvenirs inexpensively for the rest of the week. I recommend this tour without reservation as a must do activity especially on your first day for anyone visiting Budapest.

  • This tour was a great way to really see the out of the way sights and to enjoy wonderful, local food. Our guide was very knowledgeable. I would certainly recommend this tour. Jill Australia

  • Great guide, excellent food tastings....make sure you start on an empty stomach

  • Went on this tour with Gergo, he was enthusiastic and knowledgable. Lots of variety from the cured meats at the market hall, to the fish restaurant, kosher style restaurant and finally goulash and strudel at the strudel house. One thing to note - the tour started in the central market hall but doesn't spend much time there, either come early or make time to return on another day.

  • Firstly don't look for a red umbrella just stand at the entrance the lovely Monika will catch your eye, holding a print out helps.
Our group of 9 meandered through the markets tasting sliced meats, delicious cheese type scones yum and generally enjoying the variety of fresh food on offer. Budapest is land locked so not much fish but an enterprising local has opened a fish cafe where we were given a wide selection of the products. Absolutely delightful selection especially if you are a fish fanatic. That was followed by chocolate, spritzer goulash soup, strudel all this was interspersed with the history of the city and the development of the ruin pubs.
A well paced tour that went well over time. Good value
