Overview

The Cerro Negro was born one morning in April 1850 amid tremors, subterranean noises and projections of lava, is one of the most recent deliveries of the volcanic history of the planet. This young volcano has a height of 726 meters above sea level and its name derives from its characteristic color because it is surrounded by a layer of ash and rock that made impossible the growth of vegetation on its slopes.
This volcanic lake, Asososca Lagoon, with transparent water is situated in La Paz Centro town, being part of Pilas el Hoyo volcanic complex protected area. Asososca, which in Nahualt means water mirror, is surrounded by Ajusco and El Hoyo volcanoes and preserves a beauty that very few people come to enjoy.

We went volcano boarding on Cerro Negro.....it’s a pretty small volcano compared to others....we thought it would be easy. It. Was. Not The hike up was treacherous ( wear good sturdy hiking shoes ) and very hot ( until close to the top then extremely windy- which felt good but you really had to be careful and mindful of getting g blown off the trails !) Oh and we ( 3 Ladies in good shape ) could not carry the boards..we paid $1.00 each to the locals to take them up thank GOD. The sliding down was cool,...it is very much controlled by the way you sit and lean which made it not scary at all. It was a 2 minute slide down . We got videos which was cool,..but at the bottom you had to pick up your board and walk quite a ways in the sand to get to the truck that drives you back to the parking lot. The lagoon was so so,....the hike DOWN to that was equally as hard as the volcano . Just different terrain ( dirt, tree roots, rocks and sticks and stones ) it took forever to get down there ..the lagoon is beautiful but you really can’t swim in it. We tried.the bottom is very silty and it gets deep as soon as you walk in. We saw wild horses which was cool also....then the hike back up omg all 3 of us thought we were going to pass out. Very steep and slippery if shoes aren’t excellent for hiking. Long drive back to Leon where we then had to take the chicken bus back to las penitas. It was a very long day. Be prepared ,!
