Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 as a small Kasbah (fortress) by Moulay Ali Ibn Rashid Al-Alami, a descendant of Abd As-Salam al-Alami and Idris I, and through them, of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Al-Alami founded the city to fight the Portuguese invasions of northern Morocco. Along with the Ghomara tribes of the region, many Moriscos and Jews settled here after the Spanish Reconquista (Inquisition) in medieval times. The citys blue palette drives its origin from that same era, given that arriving Jewish exiles painted their houses blue to reflect their divinity a tradition that continued through the centuries. It wasnt until recently that the blue shades spread out of the Jewish quarter (the Mellah) to the other parts of the Medina (the old town) making it the blue pearl of Morocco we know today.Chefchaouen what to do - Blue City Morocco: old medina chefchaouen

This was a FANTASTIC tour and is not to be missed. We were picked up (seamlessly) from the ferry terminal by our guide, Abdul. The van was spacious and comfortable. Abdul is kind and professional and very knowledgeable. It was about a 2 hour ride to the destination but we talked and learned the entire way. Chefchaouen is spectacular and was a highlight of our trip. It is a lot of stairs but you get plenty of breaks and can go slowly. The people are friendly, the food is delicious, and the sites are gorgeous.

We had a wonderful trip to Chefcouan! Abdul was an amazing driver. So full of great information, friendly and accommodating. You are lucky if you get him as your host! When arriving in the beautiful Blue City, he handed us off to a lovely gentleman that walked us through the labarynth of streets in the city. The entire day was so wonderful, a lifelong memory. Thank you!

We took this tour with Abdul Latif and it was a very enjoyable day. He picked us up near our hotel, took us to Cape Spartel, and then drove us to Chefchaouen, telling us about Morocco and answering many questions along the way. Once in Chefchaouen, he gave us good recommendations of where to eat and how to navigate the Kasbah and took many photos for us. On the drive back, he gave us a lot of good advice for what to do and how to safely navigate Morocco for the rest of our trip. He is very personable and we recommend him as a guide.

Our guide was absolutely wonderful, both our driver and our guide in The Blue City. Felt incredibly safe and cared for, very personalized attention and was responsive to all emails. Our driver/guide was also very fluent in English and had such a great personality, this was how I spent my birthday with my two daughters and it was absolutely incredible. Yes, there is the carpet spiel at the end but it wasn't so bad and I did go home with a blue one in honor of the city:) Oh and our driver got us fresh strawberries because they were in season that we were able to take back to Spain with us! Absolutely amazing and wonderful, would book again any time!
