Overview

Familiarize yourself with Thai ingredients and learn the techniques and secrets of Thai cooking approximately 5 hours cooking class experience. Join the chef on a trip to the local market and shop for herbs, spices, and groceries. Afterwards, head to the cozy home garden to cut, slice, and fry your way to a delicious meal. The evenings cooking style is laid back, which will transfer into your meal preparation. Leave with a full stomach, a smile on your face, and lots of new recipes in mind. This shared experience has a maximum of 13 guests per class.

Know More about this tour

Begin this experience with hotel pickup around 4pm, or make your own way to the cooking school. With the chef, visit the market and collect ingredients that will be used during the meal preparation. You may choose to make 6 dishes from 6 different categories:

  • Curry Paste (green, red or massaman curry paste)
  • Curry (green curry, panang curry, khao soi (Chiang mai noodles) or massaman curry)
  • Soup (tom yam kung (hot and sour shrimp soup), tom kha gai (chicken in coconut milk soup) or Thai noodle soup)
  • Appetizer (som tam (papaya salad) or spring rolls)
  • Stir Fried (pad thai (fried noodles Thai style) or stir fried cashew nuts with chicken)
  • Extra Dishes (sticky rice with mango or banana in coconut milk)
While at the home garden you will cook one dish at the time. One wok will be provided per person to ensure you really get a feeling for the techniques. Thai food is based on a balance between the different flavors; spicy, sour, sweet, salty, and bitter. It goes beyond a single dish, but seeks to balance a full meal of various dishes. Ultimately, you will gain an understanding of this during your afternoon session and once you have cooked your way through, you can take a seat to test all of the lovely dishes you have prepared. Afterwards, you will be returned back to your hotel around 9pm with a cookbook in hand, and very full stomach.

    Mam was great guiding us through the market as well as adapting to our dietary needs. Lots of food! Making curry from scratch and rolling our own spring rolls were our highlight.

    We had a really fun time during this class. Mam is really fun and makes the whole class really enjoyable. It starts with a trip to a local market, and it's truly a locals market. No English to be seen here! Afterwards, it's back to the house for the class. Thank goodness there was a break in the middle for eating because we were hungry and dying to try some of our creations. My favorite part was probably learning how to make my own curry paste, even though it took a lot of work! Be sure to come hungry because you each make a LOT of food. We were so sad we couldn't finish it all because it really was the delicious.

    The only reason I've rated this a 4 (instead of 5), is because the class takes place outdoors so it can be pretty warm and buggy. There are fans outside and AC inside to help with all of this, but if you lose power (like we did) then it can get pretty noticeable. Otherwise, this was an awesome class and I would recommend it to anyone.
