  • Our private tour of ancient Rome was fantastic. Our tour guide, Maria, was very knowledgeable and a great story teller. She was very attentive to our kids, ages 14 and 11. After our tour of ancient Rome, she brought us to the Colosseum where we joined a small group tour. So glad we paid a little extra to see the 'basement' and the third tier!

  • this review is long overdue. our guide was stefania pistone with eyes of rome storytelling, and she was fantastic.

we were a group of four two adults, two senior citizens--one of whom was prone to veering off the moment no one was watching, and not only did stefania manage us beautifully, but she gave us a walking tour that was informative and comprehensive, yet not too strenuous. despite the crowds we were in rome during their bank holiday, so even the romans were playing tourist that day, she guided us around the colosseum, the forum, and the palatine hill in such a way that we were rarely in the thick of them.

stefania has several degrees, including one in i believe it was industrial architecture, which meant that she gave us the most interesting notes on the ruins we saw. we learned what the various buildings were used and later reused for. my father, who can always be counted on to find the fault in something, had no complaints about this tour. it was, in fact, his favorite thing about our entire two-week vacation in southern europe. four months later, this tour is still the part of our trip that he brings up.

we all appreciated being able to walk aroung the hypogeum. it may have been the best part of the colosseum portion of the tour.

this tour is absolutely worth the price. if you're able to, specifically ask for stefania. she's outstanding.

  • This was our third tour with Eyes of Rome, and also the third with Marco as our guide. As an archeologist, Marco was the perfect person to lead us through the ancient city of Rome. He was extremely knowledgeable and was able to answer any questions we had. He is a great storyteller and makes history come alive. For each of our tours he arrived at our hotel early to pick us up. On this day, we started with the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill before heading to the Colosseum. It was 103 degrees F on the day we took this tour, but Marco made sure we stopped in the shade, had plenty of water, and enjoyed views of the Forum from the top of Palatine Hill where there was a beautiful breeze. After giving us a brief tour and history of the Colosseum, Marco took us to the meeting point for the Hypogeum and Third Tier Tour, which was a small group tour conducted by a Colosseum guide. We were able to access areas of the Colosseum not available to regular visitors. It was fascinating and we were glad we were able to do it.
Overall, we were very happy with the 3 tours we did with Eyes of Rome and with Marco our guide. We only had one glitch, on the day of this tour. Our tour pickup was scheduled for 8:15, so we arrived in the lobby at 8:00. When no one showed up by 8:30, I began calling the Eyes of Rome office, but no one answered, so I began e-mailing them as well. At 8:45 someone called the hotel and informed me that they had to change our tour to 1:15 and that they had left a message at the hotel for us. We never got a message and they did not call the cell phone number that I had e-mailed them the week before in case they needed to contact us. Not being able to get through to anyone was frustrating as was not getting any messages about the change in plans. Fortunately, we did not have anything scheduled for that afternoon, so we were able to do the tour later in the day.
