Know More about this tour

Meet your professional guide at the Colosseum Metro Station in central Rome, and then head to the colossal creation itself. Once known as the Flavian Ampitheatre, the Colosseum embodies the true eminence of Ancient Rome. Built to host the gladiator battles that are synonymous with this period in history, it seated over 50,000 spectators and is undoubtedly the Roman Empire’s greatest architectural feat.

With your priority entrance ticket, skip the long lines and head directly inside. Then, follow your guide into the belly of the Colosseum to explore the fascinating underground level, which is only open to a limited amount of people each day. Stroll through the labyrinthine network of subterranean passages and chambers, and listen as your guide shares gory tales of the gladiators who prepared for battle here, and the fearsome animals that were held under the arena in cells.

Then, head up a level to the arena. Instead of walking around the edge as most visitors do, walk with your guide right into the space where the battles were fought. Tread carefully across the patches of original flooring, and peer down the gaps at the level below.

After exploring the Colosseum, enjoy a short break, then enjoy a leisurely walk up Palatine Hill, one of the Seven Hills of Rome. As you stroll amid the aromatic pine trees, listen to your guide talk about the origins of Rome, and see where the rich Romans once lived.

Then, descend into the valley of the Roman Forum. With your guide leading the way, weave through the cluster of ruins that once formed the heart of ancient Rome, and learn about the area’s highlights, such as the Arch of Titus and the Senate.

Your tour then concludes in the Roman Forum where you will have the possibility to wander around more if you wish.

  • Nadia, our tour guide, provided us with a logical and detailed history of the Colosseum and a few of the emperors integral to its success. The Palatine Hill and Forum were less of a focus on this tour but we were still able to touch upon the highlights. It's always best to see any structure with a small group so I highly recommend this tour.

  • Took two Colosseum tours - one topside and one underground. This second tour was well worth it. Did you know there is a river down there? Also a model of how they got wild animals to the arena floor, among other things. Fascinating!

  • Frederica was an excellent guide. Highly knowledgeable and extremely friendly. Great trip!

  • This tour was the highlight of my trip! Our tour guide was fun, extremely knowledgeable, and made the experience very interesting. I learned a lot on this trip, the time spent was perfect, and the sites were incredible. I got a huge kick out of being able to access the upper-tier and underground chamber as it was a very exclusive part of the tour. Because it was a small group, we got a lot of personalized attention from our guide and she was very accommodating to our group.

  • We were pleased with our guide, but very unhappy with the misinformation we were fed in our Viator instruction sheet: ABSOLUTELY NO BACKPACKS AND NO CLOAKROOM AND NO WATER BOTTLES OF ANY KIND into the Colosseum. This cost us another 20 for water, rain ponchos, and chintzy umbrella since we'd been told we couldn't bring our own in a backpack. Once inside, we noticed every other tourist was wearing a backpack and carrying a water bottle! Heck. Our own guide was carrying a water bottle. While it's true there's no cloakroom a regular daypack sized backpack is allowed with no questions just the predictable post 9/11 metal detector biz. The tour contractor tells me this restriction was lifted 18 months ago, they've asked Viator to correct their information, but nothing has been done. So, if their information sheet to you sounds like ours, just know it probably isn't accurate.

Like our other Viator tour in Rome through a different contractor, we had to walk past a good deal of artifacts, story boards, etc., because our guide was on a time-line which didn't include any of these bits. We could not re-enter to see these items at our own pace. They tell us this is a Colosseum-imposed restriction. Be aware, if you buy a Viator ticket primarily to bypass the long queues and to see part of the underground as we did, you will forfeit your ability to see any and all of what's to be seen. If I had it to do over again, I think I'd pick the queue. But then, we went at the first of November in the summer a private tour that gets you past the queue in Rome's beastly heat and humidity is probably worth its weight in gold.

We saw a very small percentage of The Forum while on the tour. Even though our guide left us in The Forum and we could wander around, it was just 30 minutes till closing so we saw practically nothing of those ruins. And, of course, were not allowed to re-enter the next day or within 24 hours, as many historical sites allow.

Someone's making a very good profit letting tourists see very little of the sites.

  • Excellent tour with limited number of people on tour. Great access to the hidden parts of the Colosseum. Would take this tour again.

  • First rate!

  • Excellent tour! Our guide Giulia was on time and really knew her stuff about the Colosseum, The Forum and basically all things related to Rome. This was definitely the highlight of my trip. Highly recommend.
