Know More about this tour

Meet your professional guide at the Colosseum Metro Station in central Rome, and then head to the colossal creation itself. Once known as the Flavian Ampitheatre, the Colosseum embodies the true eminence of Ancient Rome. Built to host the gladiator battles that are synonymous with this period in history, it seated over 50,000 spectators and is undoubtedly the Roman Empires greatest architectural feat.

With your priority entrance ticket, skip the long lines and head directly inside. Then, follow your guide into the belly of the Colosseum to explore the fascinating underground level, which is only open to a limited amount of people each day. Stroll through the labyrinthine network of subterranean passages and chambers, and listen as your guide shares gory tales of the gladiators who prepared for battle here, and the fearsome animals that were held under the arena in cells.

Then, head up a level to the arena. Instead of walking around the edge as most visitors do, walk with your guide right into the space where the battles were fought. Tread carefully across the patches of original flooring, and peer down the gaps at the level below.

After exploring the Colosseum, enjoy a short break, then enjoy a leisurely walk up Palatine Hill, one of the Seven Hills of Rome. As you stroll amid the aromatic pine trees, listen to your guide talk about the origins of Rome, and see where the rich Romans once lived.

Then, descend into the valley of the Roman Forum. With your guide leading the way, weave through the cluster of ruins that once formed the heart of ancient Rome, and learn about the areas highlights, such as the Arch of Titus and the Senate.

Your tour then concludes in the Roman Forum where you will have the possibility to wander around more if you wish.

  • I was turned away by an extremely rude tour guide. Unfortunately I did not get to experience the Colosseum from the inside, my main reason for coming to Italy.

  • I just wanted to say that Rachel was amazing and exceeded all expectations. I honestly can say that she only enhanced my experience at the Colosseum and I am grateful we had her. Her knowledge, energy and passion is everything that you want from a guide. And the fact she was english speaking, made it easier. I have had a few tours throughout Italy and whilst the guide speak english, you can't understand them, so with Rachel being american - added bonus.

One of the other huge benefits it that it's small group and access to the VIP. I booked all my tours in Australia prior to coming over so couldn't remember what I had actually booked, so it was great that it was only 6 people. This tour is just amazing.

  • I've done this same tour with Viator in the large group and small group format with different family members along visiting with me. No question: it's worth it to pay extra for the small group tour experience! The website said it our group would be no more than eight, but it ended up being just six of us. The previous summer I had done the same Viator Colosseum/Forum tour but in a large group of 20-25. The extra cost was totally worth it. And our guide was fantastic! She was so knowledgeable, interesting, and patient. Great at taking questions and giving us what felt like an unhurried and in-depth understanding of what we were seeing.

  • Francesca was an incredible guide. My mom and I went on the tour and loved it. We were able to see the underground part and get the history behind everything and we traveled to the upper levels as well. She gave us time at each spot to stop and take pictures and ask questions. It was the best part of our Rome trip. Plus the small group size was perfect!

  • Phenomenal experience. Our tour guide Francesca P. was wonderful and made the entire trip worth while! This tour is a MUST DO while in Rome.

  • Our 6-person tour with Francesca P. of LivItaly Tours was FANTASTIC! Her background as an archaeologist and scholar of these sites was first-rate, and I would highly recommend her tour of the Colosseum Underground/Arena/General Public area, Palatine Hill, and Roman Forum. You will cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time and learn far more than going it alone.

The only thing I would change is that Viator's description of the tour is somewhat misleading. In the What You Can Expect section, it reads: Continue up to the top level, where Romes lower classes sat, and take in a birds-eye view of the arena. I thought this meant that a tour of the upper levels aka the Belvedere was included, but it is not. Nevertheless, the Colosseum Underground and Arena, alone, are worth every penny of this tour. It's quite a thrill to see the infrastructure of this magnificent building project and to inhabit the world of the gladiator. And you do visit the mid-way level above the Arena, which provides a sweeping view of the space.

  • Fantastic tour of the Colosseum and Forum! There were just 2 couples in this group and small group tours are the only way to see the sites in Rome.

  • Out of our 9 day trip to Rome, with 7 tours booked, this one was our absolute favorite! I would give it 6 stars if I could. Our guide, Francesca P, was outstanding - a fountain of knowledge. There were only 6 people in our group, and the tour took us to areas not open to general admission, so we never had difficulty hearing our guide. The Colosseum underground and Roman Forum are truly a must-see but be aware that there is lots of walking for this tour. And take your camera, as there are lots of great photo ops!

  • I would highly recommend!

  • We had a tour guide called Luca and he was amazing explained everything in the best possible way and made the whole tour really fun best part of our trip to rome. He made up story's about what could have happened to us in the days of the Roman empire.
