Know More about this tour

After meeting your guide in central Chania, set off on your stroll around the city to learn about its culinary history while scouting out its beloved cafes, markets and delicatessens. As you walk, learn about Cretes cuisine as well as the islands history.

Founded as a Minoan settlement, Crete went on to be ruled by the Romans, Arabs, Byzantines, Venetians and Ottoman Turks, with each set of rulers leaving their stamp on the islands culinary history. As is the case in many Mediterranean islands, recipes are handed down from one generation to the next, leading to dishes that are cooked with beautiful local ingredients according to centuries-old methods.

Amble through Patriarchou Athinagora, one of the Old Town squares, continue past Chania Cathedral, and then wander through the little-known backstreets and alleyways to find the Chania eateries favored by locals.

The number of food stops varies, as does the type of samples you may try. However, every tour includes local specialties such as rusks the delicious and crusty twice-baked Cretan bread rolls and koulouri, donut-shaped bread encrusted with sweetened sesame seeds. Cheese, olive oil, olives and sweet pie are other examples of typical delicacies that may be included.

Having enjoyed three hours exploring Chania and discovering its food gems, work your way back to the start point where your food tour finishes.

  • Really interesting way to spend 3 hours. The guide, George, was knowledgable, entertaining with a good sense of humour. I really enjoyed the trip to the market and went back there to some of the same stores - a lot better value than in the harbour area.

The only thing I would add is a stop for coffee - by 12pm I was dying for a cup and the visit to the bean roasting place was torture.

  • This is a very informative tour about the foods of Crete. I would suggest taking this tour at the beginning of your vacation. Also, the foods tasted although very delicious are very rich for a morning tour so I would do an afternoon if available. I would recommend this tour.

  • The tour is GREAT! We tasted olive oils, cheeses, honeys, sweet and savory pastries, loukoumades, breads and our favorite - the Bougatsa!! Maria was a knowledgeable and fun guide. We did the tour on our first day in Chania and it was a great introduction to the village and harbour. We then knew where to go and what shops and restaurants to revisit. Highly recommend it!!

  • This was a wonderful trip and we got to see a lot of Chania old town, visiting a number of George's favourite places for the best Cretan food products. I really loved how we learnt about the local people and the history of the diet as we went. It was far more than just a food tasting tour. I am glad I decided to take this tour as George was a wonderful guide. And our small group of five was the perfect size tour. I would highly recommend doing this tour if you are in Chania. And do it early in your stay - because I guarantee there will be places you will want to re-visit. Thank you George. This was one of the highlights of my trip to Crete.

  • A very enjoyable tour both for the history of Crete and Chania in particular and for the knowledge of local cuisine and specialities. It was particularly useful at the beginning of our holiday. We would certainly recommend it. The only additional comment I might make is that a longer period in the market would have been good.

  • Very informative tour, lots of history and local information included.- Chania is a beautiful town. We got to see a lot of places you may not find as a local. All the food and drink we sampled was delicious.

  • We had a very nice morning and enjoyed the tour. We got a good overview of cretan food. However, we missed a typical greek coffee and the spices introduction felt like a commercial tour. Anyhow, we enjoyed it.

  • Great tour and very informative guide! The food and the experience were both without equal!

  • Our guide, the very intelligent professor at the University, gave one of the best presentations that I had on this Mediterranean Cruise! Very good use of English and her language skills of finding the right word to fit the situation was outstandingl

  • Great tour! The guide, George, was friendly and informative. Easy location chosen to start the tour. Loved all the stops - the cheese one was our least favorite but that's just because we don't eat much of it. The olive oil shop was one of our favorites along with the last place for dessert! Definitely didn't need to eat any lunch that day. Would highly recommend this tour when in Crete.
