I felt specially treated on the tour. When I heard that the main hike is long and up, I opted for a more relaxed day. Was a nice mix of things. The cooler temperature was welcome.
It was two of us: my 25yo daughter (from San Diego hiking every weekend) and 50yo myself (from Tampa hiking once in a blue moon). I will give this activity 6 out of 10 for difficulty (for me, for 50yolder, for my daughter it was 1-2) and 10 out of 10 for fun. It was a wonderful day with our tour guide Mario and few other tourists, we did a lot! we saw a lot! we took unbelievable photos! we had a nice local lunch! lifetime memories for sure. I definitely recommend to buy this trip, it was interesting for both of us.
MyFriendMario was an amazing tour guide!
Highly recommend anything he does with you in Panama.
Catered to higher level hikers and those wanting less intense experience.
Super knowledgable and kind, as was his partner Doni Wilson.
I have to say, not AT ALL how it was published...We had only 3 people on tour, so my guess is...they cut CORNERS at our expense. should have cancelled the tour due to lack of participation. A college student driving his own car was our driver, NOT GUIDE.
The El Valle Anton tour was supposed to include a hike in the dormant volcano, visit to a scenic village, a zoo with wildlife and botanical garden, jungle waterfall, soak in natural hot springs, and visit the local handicraft market. We started off with a visit to the waterfalls that was refreshing and fun to walk across the swaying suspension bridges. We passed by the market on our way to the park with the hike to the volcano rim. Our tour guide told us that it was a 30-45 min. hike for those in good shape. The beginning of the trail up to the big rock was fine and listed as easy. From there the path was rocky, uneven, slippery, and steep in places. We were struggling and stopped for a moment and folks coming down said we were not half-way yet. We decided to stop and go back. When we got back to the start and looked at the Large sign board with the trail map, it indicated this was a 3km hike just to the top and would take 3 hours and that after the rock it was listed as moderate and later as severe. Hardly 45 minutes!! We waited a LONG time for the rest of the group to return - it was 4 hours later. We got back on the bus and went to town for lunch. We then had 10 minutes to spend in the market, got back on the bus and arrived at the zoo about 4:30pm - the closing time. The zoo did stay open and we had about 45 minutes - it was a sorry state with animals in small cages and no explanation about the botanical gardens. We did not go to the Thermal Springs because they had already closed. The guide took way too long on the hike so we did not have adequate time for the market and did not get to the thermal springs at all and we were both looking forward to that. Unless you really like hiking over steep, slippery, muddy, rugged terrain, I would avoid this tour. The driver was very nice and very good. We did not get back to Panama City until 7:30 pm and we were exhausted.
I couldn’t be any more pleased! Mario our tour guide was awesome! From the time he picked us up to the time we were dropped off was all jokes mixed into history. He made us feel safe. The view from the mountain top was priceless! I would recommend everyone to do this adventure.
Super nice day and an amazing tour-guide! He was outstanding, showed El Valle very personal, adjusting to any needs we had, very proactive and most of all fun! :)
Panama City is interesting no doubt, but it can get monotonous. This tour out of the city allowed us to see more of what Panama had to offer.
This was easily our favorite day of our week-long vacation in Panama City and Cartagena, Columbia. We had a bit of a panic when we realized that we didn't know our pickup location, but we were able to call Mario on the phone and sort it out. Mario was a great guide. He is very friendly and speaks good English, but when I mentioned I was trying to learn Spanish, he challenged me to get better by speaking to me mostly in Spanish.
The day starts with a guided hike led by a kid from the local community. We hiked up the hillside of the volcano, and came back down through some gorgeous rainforest and waterfalls. The hike is VERY hard- my husband and I are athletes and found it very difficult. It's not very far in terms of mileage, but the elevation change makes it very challenging. I would not recommend this for older folks, inexperienced hikers, or young kids. Our total hiking time was about an hour and a half.
After the hike, we went to the natural pools, which was delightful! There were two pools and mud masks that we could put on in a smaller pool. One of the pools was very hot (just under hot-tub temp) and the other was around 85-90 degrees (F). This is definitely a kid-friendly place, but it wasn't overly busy and there weren't kids splashing everywhere.
After the pool, we had lunch at a little roadside place that Mario recommended. It didn't look like much but the food was fabulous.
Then, we walked across the street to the local market. There's no difference between this market and other trinket/tourist markets in Panama City, but the prices are slightly cheaper.
Finally, we went to a local zoo, which was nice and beautiful, but wasn't really a make or break part of the day for me. I could see how this could be really fun for the little ones, if you're traveling with kids. The Zoo was owned and operated by local veterinarians, and had a lot of birds, a few monkeys, a tapir (the coolest animal we saw) and 2 cheetahs. I'm always a little iffy on the ethics of local zoos like this, but Mario assured me it was well-run and all the animals were there because they couldn't live in the wild.
Everything about the experience matched the listing, and we definitely thought the cost was worth it. You're essentially paying for a private ride from Panama City and access to Mario's expertise, because you have to pay nominal entry fees at all stops on the trip. All in all, totally worth the cost because we never could have replicated this trip on our own.
Interesting excursion. We did everything that was described on the site. My husband and I enjoyed the thermal spa,the pool, the zoo and the museum. But we didn't get any drinks as it is advertise on the trip description.
