Return to La Paz the same day, or stay overnight at La Senda Verde or in Coroico.

Know More about this tour

Meet your team of expert guides from Gravity Assisted Mountain Biking early in the morning at Cafe del Mundo on Sarganaga Street in La Paz. From there, a minibus takes you for an hour-long ride to La Cumbre. Featured in numerous news outlets, Gravity has led more than 33,000 riders safely down the mountain and is recognized by major travel guides for its exemplary safety record and practices.

In La Cumbre, on a plain in the Andes at 15,400 feet (4,700 meters) above sea level, note the low clouds and admire the snowcapped mountains, including Huayna Potosí, the highest peak near La Paz. Here, receive your safety briefing and practice using your mountain bike against gusts of cold wind.

Pedal off and begin your death-defying ride down what locals dubbed Camino de la Muerte, or Death Road. The route has been christened the world's most dangerous road by organizations like the Inter-American Development Bank; you'll find out why on your 40-mile journey that descends 11,800 feet (3,600 meters), most of which is downhill.

Ride through mist and rain on a mountain-hugging asphalt road just wide enough for two-way traffic. From the corner of your eye, catch glimpses of small villages and grazing llamas nearby, but keep your focus on the slippery road ahead of you. Pedal uphill for a few lung-sapping miles before proceeding downhill again (this portion of the ride is optional, and you may ride in the support vehicle following your group if you prefer not to bike certain parts of the tour).

Stop periodically along the way to rest, have refreshments, and snap shots of the soaring cliffs, rock overhangs and lush green vegetation.

Next up is the most difficult part of the ride. Enter the subtropics of the Amazonian jungle as the asphalt road turns into a dirt road, a much narrower path with gravel and mud. Take a deep breath as you realize nothing separates you from the sheer cliff drops of more than 3,300 feet (1,000 meters) a short distance away. You can, however, take some comfort in knowing that most of the traffic has been diverted to a newer road elsewhere. During the bumpy and dusty ride, feel the mist on your face from the cascading waterfalls to your right.

Just when you think it can’t get any more humid, you're almost finished! Arrive at the village of Yolosa, the end of your descent, and ride to La Senda Verde Ecotourism Resort, an animal refuge. Enjoy a hot shower, unwind by the pool and feast on a pasta buffet lunch. While you relax, take in the incredible scenery, and observe monkeys, parrots and other rescued wildlife.

After several hours of resting at La Senda Verde, ride the minivan back to La Paz, about a three- to four-hour drive. You also have the option of staying overnight at La Senda Verde or being dropped off in the main square of Coroico. Wherever you sleep, you'll do it well knowing your day on Death Road has earned you considerable bragging rights.

  • Fantastic tour, safe, organized, and truly excellent, knowledgable guide with Scotty from Scotland. Highly highly recommend this tour. Brand new bikes through Kona and excellent gear, guidance and equipment.

  • This tour, with Gravity La Paz was amazing! Our guide Noel was fantastic a really nice guy and the perfect combination of fun and professional which is important considering the potential safety hazards of this activity. The bike was in good condition and appropriate for the ride, the optional safety gear gloves, pants and jacket were much appreciated and the compulsory helmet properly fitted. Any assistance required was given including bike repairs for flat tyres and medical attention. Our bus driver Willy was awesome, who followed us as the safety vehicle the whole way down and then took us back up Death Road in the dark afterwards! The snacks and lunch provided were great and plenty of water was available to refill bottles. The ride itself was amazing - the scenery incredible and the degree of difficulty moderately challenging however the potential consequences quite serious. I would definitely suggest that to enjoy this experience to the fullest, participants should be fairly familiar with and confident on a bike. An excellent Bolivian adventure!

  • The death road tour was amazing, and I would recommend it to anyone considering doing it. There were lots of other people offering similar tours, but this one stood out they were well organised, focused on the safety of everyone in the group and had great quality equipment bikes, clothes etc. The guide was friendly, knowledgeable and always ready to help. They took care to make sure that everyone in the group which had a variety of ages and skill was comfortable and went the extra mile during the cycle to keep the group together, and briefed on what each section of Death Road entailed. The ride itself is mostly downhill, so fitness isn't a huge factor. With steep hills and lots of turns, this trip is great for people looking for a bit of adventure. Really glad I booked this trip, was a highlight of my trip so far!

  • This was my favorite day of my trip to the salt plains and la paz. It was so much fun and thrilling. A must do if you are ever in La Paz.

  • This is a very well organized tour. It's for adrenaline junkies, mountain bikers, and really, anyone afraid of heights that wants to challenge themselves. I fall in the latter category. My husband, meanwhile, falls in the former. We lucked out with the weather and were treated to clear skies and breathtaking views -- in January, no less. Our guides were Robbie and William, and we couldn't have asked for anyone better. Our driver was Cumpa, and does he know how to drive!

From start to finish, the tour was wonderful. Robbie was excellent about allaying my fears of falling off the side of a cliff. They're total pros. On the downhill ride down the WMDR, you stop at 8-10 points along the road, where Robbie gives you a brief overview of what might be coming -- is there a wipeout corner, a waterfall, a stream? He tells you all about what to expect so that you can take it as safely as possible. The other great thing is that they don't rush you -- you can go at your own pace. There's always someone at the front of the group, and then a guide at the back of the group usually, unless they need to go up ahead to take pictures of the group. If there is no guide at the back, you can rest assured that the van is following and will come to your aid if something goes awry which nothing did!.

All in all, it was an amazing day and I was able to overcome my fears and feel a sense of accomplishment. Safety is Gravity's biggest concern and it's absolutely evident in the way their tours are organized. We would definitely do another trip with Robbie and crew again, the next time we visit Bolivia.

  • I had a great time on the Death Road Tour. I felt 100 safe at all times and the guides and driver were safe, helpful, and professional. The guides even took pictures and uploaded them to Google Drive after our tour. So don't bother bringing a camera unless it's small as plenty of pictures will be taken along the way. Also, be sure to bring a change of clothes. At the end of the tour, there are showers with hot water...yes!! and you'll definitely want to take advantage of them after cycling half of the day.

The only thing that keeps me from giving this review 5 stars is the following: When I originally booked my tour, the tour company, Gravity, offered hotel pickup. However, some time between my booking and my tour date, they changed their policy. AND they did not notify me that pickup was now in a central location. The location was convenient to my hotel, so no biggie. But, the fact that the company NEVER contacted me to let me know is a bit problematic. I found out that their policy had changed after I emailed them to confirm the time. Definitely not a professional way to do business.

  • Awesome. The ride down was great. The van ride up after was truly terrifying. Robbie, the guide, was very professional and safety-minded. Also, he was very informative. When I go back to Bolivia, I will definitely do this again.

  • An awesome day with beautiful views over the incredible landscapes around death road. Gravity was a good and serious company with great equipment and the bikes was perfect for this roads. Good lunch at the end of the tour. The guide made us feel really safe. Definitely worth the extra bucks!
