Know More about this tour

Meet your guide on Edinburghs Royal Mile, the main thoroughfare of the Old Town, and then set off on foot to begin your walking tour of the citys shade side. Edinburgh is crawling with odd activity, and there are tales of murderers, vampires, monsters and even cannibals that locals nervously recall to each other.
Follow your guide through dark courtyards and eerie alleys, and hear spine-chilling stories of executions, murders, torture, ghosts and witchcraft. Then, make for the North Bridge, with its own formidable history, before climbing Calton Hill.
Feel the hair on the back of your neck stand on end as your guide tells real-life tales of gore and gruesomeness, including stories about the witch trials that once took place here. Discover how the site is still used today for pagan rituals such as the Edinburgh Beltane Fire Festival, and drink in 360-degree views of the citys skyline.
Then, continue to the Old Calton Burial Ground, one of Edinburghs chilling cemeteries. See the imposing mausoleum that marks the final resting place of David Hume, who is said to have made a deal with the devil, and perhaps hear of the infamous body snatchers Burke and Hare. Alternatively, visit the Canongate Kirkyard cemetery, which dates back to the 17th century. Rest assured, there is no staged gimmickry, monster masks or made-up stories on this tour.
After roughly two hours, your tour concludes at a local pub near the Royal Mile, where you can purchase a pint of beer or a dram of whisky to help cool your nerves after this entertaining and intriguing tour (own expense).

  • Good and educational if a bit cheesy. We enjoyed it tho!!

  • It was a super cold night and there were only 4 total people on the tour, but our guide, Adam, was awesome. The passion he had for telling the stories was probably the best I have had concerning a guide. Edinburgh is steeped with a glorious yet treacherous history and Adam made these stores come to life. Highly recommended!

  • Max is amazing!!

  • Great tour!!! Highly recommend this when visiting Edinburgh.

  • Our tour guide made it more of a comedic act than something spooky. The stories were interesting though. I would be curious to see how the other tour guides take their groups around.

  • Very animated tour guide with a great sense of humor! Worth doing. Make sure you have your walking shoes on!

  • What a good way to learn the history and interesting stories of Edinburgh. Adam was an amazing story teller. He was so animated that the stories just came to life. I could of listened to him tell stories all day long.

One Tip: The climb to the top of Carlton Hill is a little difficult , but well worth it. I have a medical condition that caused me to lag behind the group Adam was so kind and caring to walk to the back of the line to make sure I was doing ok, while never compromising the schedule or the experience of the Tour for the others..

  • We went on this tour in the height of the Fringe Festival so there were people everywhere. The first glitch was trying to find the meeting point. The confirmation email said to meet outside of the Starbucks on the Royal Mile. Well there are 2 Starbucks and with all the people enjoying the Fringe, it wasn't a quick walk uphill to get to the RIGHT Starbucks. Second issue was that they said to look for the tour guide under Red umbrellas. No red umbrellas. Luckily someone else was looking for the guide as well and went roaming around asking everyone so eventually he found her and came back to get the rest of us that had gathered outside of the Starbucks. The guide Paula was personable and geared her discussion to all in the group. Luckily Paula has a loud voice as it was really hard to hear with all of the people around. The group size was LARGE which made it even harder to hear her at times. We are used to more intimate tours so this wasn't turning our crank and the reason why I wouldn't do it again. Be prepared to walk as the name implies but it's different walking than what you might be used to - uphills, many stairs, down cobbled streets. Not for someone with mobility issues. It also was pretty standard stuff that we had heard on other tours or read in books and online. Nothing too new or exciting.

  • Scary, fun, but scary. Ride at the end was a good one.

  • Sarah was wonderful! Lots of local knowledge, shared personal stories and was a very efficient tour guide - which was great for us as we had just 1 day in Edinburgh. I do wish there was an option for a longer tour! :
