The form of the pyramid can be explained as a development of the large mastabas (mud-brick tombs) of the First and Second Dynasties; the six steps, each smaller than the one below, having been produced by the addition to the original mastaba of successive new layers of masonry, accompanied by the enlargement of the lower stages.
The Step Pyramid stands 60 meters high and is built of locally quarried clay sandstone of poor quality. You can no longer enter the pyramid due to safety issues. The chambers and passages in the interior of the pyramid served partly for the burial of close relatives of the King (in particular those of his sons who died in childhood) and partly for storing grave-goods for the use of the dead

Traveler Reviews

  • 03-May-2018

Egypt itself was amazing and this tour had great coverage of its high points. The best part about this tour was how dependable the pick-ups at each juncture were. They were always on time, whether for airport transfers, optional tours, regular tours. A great lack in organization was that on the day of our arrival we were given a whole booklet of optional tours that we had no idea about and an option was not allowed to pay by VISA, so we had to keep stopping at ATMs to get more Egyptian pounds. We had no idea that these optional tours were possible before the tour and I booked it 5 months in advance. We found out about the possibility to go on a hot air balloon ride the night before for a 430am pick-up! This booklet should strongly be attached to an email in advance! It included light shows and visits to nubian villages, etc. Also, in February I was told I would be sent the hotel/cruise/flight info shortly, and it didn't come, I asked for it via email a couple days before the trip in April. Another issue was a lot of pressure to do a video extolling the virtues of the tour, and when I asked questions the guide got mad and it was super awkward. A tour with Le Merdian hotel would be much better as well.
