Overview

A highly recommended MUST DO activity if you want to avoid the touristy areas! Go to local spots and try different kinds of seasonal and authentic dishes for an unforgettable culinary journey.

We begin our tour by entering the chasm of eateries overrun on a nightly basis by the working class of Japan. Then we will stop for local bites and an introduction to drinking and dining culture in Tokyo, and then continue to wind our way to head to another spot that specializes in Oden, a standard of Japanese home-cooking that just cannot be missed.

Then you will get to try Yakitori- world-famous Japanese meat and veggie BBQ skewers grilled over charcoal in a classic "Under the Tracks" restaurant. After, you will have a chance to indulge in a savory bowl of RAMEN. We will show you how to order, what the basics are, and help you practice your SLURPING techniques! Finally taste a special traditional dessert, where you will have the opportunity to watch this being cooked in front of you.

Know More about this tour

At 5pm, meet your guide at Shimbashi train station. Come hungry and thirsty, and ready for a 2.5-hour tour in which you will experience the endless rows, alleys, and twists and turns of Shimbashi, the 'salaryman center of the world.' Known for its rustic izakayas and abundant food stalls, discover some of the area's most tucked-away places to grab some delicious food.

Begin your tour outside Shimbashi station and enter the chasm of eateries filled on a nightly basis by the working class of Japan. You are instantly surrounded by thousands of salaryman descending upon their favorite Izakaya bar to grab a quick bite and cold beer before taking the long train ride home.

Not far into your journey, stop for okonomiyaki, a savory pancake made by mixing ingredients like finely sliced squid, shrimp, pork, beef, and cabbage into a batter made from flour before grilling on a flat-iron grill. Wash your okonomiyaki down with a cold drink.

Continue winding your way through the maze of izakayas and long alleys filled with local eateries. Head to another spot that specializes in food from the south of Japan. This place grows their own vegetables and raises their own chickens so everything is extremely fresh. Try four different varieties of local food, each with a very distinct taste from this region of Japan.

Finally, enjoy a special traditional Japanese dessert called taiyaki, a fish-shaped street dessert with a choice of filling, cream or azuki (bean paste). Take advantage of the opportunity to see how the dessert is prepared; taste one of the best taiyaki you'll find in Tokyo and discover why it is the locals' all-time favorite. Take your time at the last spot and once everyone has satisfied their appetites, end the tour back at Shimbashi Station.

The Shimbashi Hidden Gems tour was awesome!! Yappy is a great guide who showed us some of the coolest hidden places in Tokyo. The food and drink was great. The proprietors and customers were charming. The atmosphere was something out of a 1960's movie! This was an amazing tour that I would highly recommend, especially for those who want to experience a nostalgic Japan mood. Thanks Yappy! Thanks Arigato Travel !

Don't miss the chance to take this evening food tour, especially if you can get Yappy (Yosuhiro Ogahara) as your guide. We went to places we never would have found on our own, and the evening was one of the highlights of our time in Tokyo. We were lucky enough to come to Japan just as it was opening up, and there were few Westerners and other tourists to contend with. Our group was just four of us, and we had a stunning meal at an izakawa in the same family for generations (Grandma, Mom and chef were all in attendence.) Some of the best dumplings I've ever had. We also hung out at a sake bar and visited a couple of other hole-in-the wall places. What a treat, and Yappy, whose English is first rate, made it all even more enjoyable. Five stars!

Great food tour in the Shimbashi area which is famous for being the afterwork heaven for salarymen with izakaya lying underneath the train bridge. As we are eating typical food with the locals, you can hear and feel the train passing above us. Our guide Kay was amazing! Full of energy and always teaching us about fun facts on the food we were eating. Thank you Kay!

We loved this tour! Kazuya was such a great guide, he taught us so much about the city and took plenty of photos for us. He was also very funny and the food was delicious! Definitely recommend!

Tim was great and we learnt so much in a relatively short time. Took the kids and they really enjoyed it too.

Our family (2 adults, 3 children) had a couple of days in Tokyo and a friend recommended Arigato walking tours. What a great introduction to different types of local cuisine that we would never have found (or tried) on our own. Tim is a passionate, knowledgeable guide, and speaks excellent Japanese. We highly recommend this company and its tours.

It was Christmas Eve and we had the most wonderful night celebrating it in Tokyo with Yappy. We have some dietary restrictions (vegetarian and pescatarian) and he was so great about it all and very helpful and informative!

Satoshi was the guide for our family of four adults during this evening food tour. Satoshi offered a great balance and variety between different types of ambiance and food. We got to experience foods that we wouldn't be able to eat very easily without speaking the language. The tour was very enlightening. Satoshi was genuinely excited to have the opportunity to show us around Tokyo and was interested in learning about our culture and sharing about his! He has great interpersonal skills. We highly recommend this tour with Satoshi!

We had a lovely experience with Ryan! He was so knowledgeable about culture and history, and we loved hearing his own experiences as we walked. He was infinitely patient with our entire group; nothing seemed to faze him. He was welcomed in all of our stops as a friend - it was the perfect way to get acclimated to the Tokyo food scene!
