Overview

This educational museum is housed in the Saaihalle, one of the most beautiful buildings in Bruges, which increases its attraction to tourists even more. It explains the history of the potato and fries and the different condiments with which they are habitually served.

Know More about this tour

On the ground floor you can learn about the fascinating history of the potato which originated in Peru more than 10,000 years ago.

On the first floor, the visitor can discover the history of the fries and how they came to Belgium and in the basement of the building, in the medieval cellars, it is even possible to sample some.

The Frietmuseum completes the choice of museums in harmony with all the others which the town of Bruges has to offer and allows the visitor to discover the origins of one of the greatest Belgian culinary specialities, of which we are very proud: potato fries.

The museum was created by the families Cdric and Eddy Van Belle who also created in Bruges the Belgian chocolate museum, Choco-Story, and the domestic lighting museum, Lumina Domestica.

Unfortunately a tourist trap mostly information available in Wikipedia and some frying pans, some dolls..nothing special at all and a food bar at the basement that is same as any other around Bruges. Tip: if you order, just stick with Fries and no other snack

When my wife and I came across this as one of the top things to do in the city, we were originally a bit bewildered. But things quickly changed when we got to this quirky little museum which contained a wealth of knowledge and fun facts about ‘French’ fries. It’s a bit bizarre but great fun. The smell of fries hits you when you enter, and that lingers until the end of the ‘tour’ when you can head to the basement to the cafeteria. Really great price not only for the ticket, but for the food in the cafeteria too!

Was super cheesy but really fun and quite interesting. The chips you eat at the end were so good worth going in as they’re super discounted.

One point to improve: I would love a fries cone slide to get down instead of the stairs. I really like the potato guns ( I’m 31 by the way). Pretty good was the audio guide with German language. It explains everything from the soil to grow till “how to frie it”. The fries song was really funny though.
