Visit Antigua, Guatemala, a town where time stands still. Once the third largest city in all of Spanish Colonial America and for 200 years the capital of Guatemala, it is today a peaceful, beautiful and partially restored colonial city. Cobblestone streets wind through the city of majestic churches and monasteries.
You will be picked up at your hotel in Guatemala city and transferred to Colonial Antigua guatemala to begin your soft walking tour of Antigua. Youll visit Central Park, Cathedral of Santiago, Arch of Santa Catalina and La Merced Church.
Central Park is located at the heart of the city, surrounded by the traditional grid pattern frequently utilized in Spanish urban planning in the colonies. The park is surrounded by the Palace of the Generals Captain ,the City Hall, the church of San Jos (formerly the Cathedral of Guatemala), the Archbishops Palace and the Portal of Commerce (or the Bakers Portal). Here, visitors will also find the beautiful Mermaids Fountain. The Count of Gomera (Gomera is the word for a rubber plantation) the fountain was built in remembrance of a popular legend, which tells the story of a King whose daughters gave birth but did not want to nurse their children. Learn about this famous story as you immerse yourself in the legendary colonial city.
Next, you will explore the Cathedral which was constructed between 1543 and 1680 with an elaborate baroque faade, typical of antique churches. The Cathedral has smooth columns, a body and a belfry that was rebuilt after the Santa Marta earthquake in 1773. You then proceed to the Arch of Santa Catalina. This institution was established in 1609, and the nuns in this temple and convent were cloistered. The temple was inaugurated on the 15th of September, 1647. In 1694, the construction of the arch was finished and it served as a bridge to connect the convent with the gardens on the other side of the street.
At the end of the tour youll be transferred back to your hotel in Guatemala city.

Everything went like clockwork. We were contacted via SMS the previous day, and confirmed pick up time in Guatemala City. Juan arrived punctually, but spoke very limited English. However, we enjoyed a scenic 1-hour drive to Antigua. Galileo met us at that office less than 5 minutes after arrival. We enjoyed a leisurely walking tour of the quaint, colonial town as Galileo provided history and background of the sites. We expressed interest in a couple of local products (Jade, coffee, chocolate), and he made time to take us to the authentic, quality locations to see/buy these. He did not rush us at any time. The tour was outstanding and we would highly recommend it. La Antigua is beautiful! We visited the historical sites and the shops and wish we had planned more time there. We would recommend staying at least one night in one of the beautiful "Casas" in Antigua and taking the time to enjoy the ambience and the local culture to a greater extent. The locals are welcoming and warm and no high pressure sales. (A couple of the local hotels with history: Posada de Don Rodrigo and hotel Casa Santo Domingo).
I was supposed to be picked up in my hotel in Guatemala city by 8:30 AM but nobody came. After several phone calls they sent a taxi at 10:45 AM to take me to Antigua where I was supposed to have joined the tour group. I reached Antigua around noon and was taken to another travel agency Sunrise. A guide was assigned to me and he walked me through Antigua but for lack of time he could not show me all the sights. I returned to the agency at 3 PM because the tour bus was supposed to pick me up for my return journey. Again, I had to wait and ultimately, around 3:45 PM a car picked me up and dropped me back to my hotel in Guatemala City.
Very short, rushed tour of Guatemala city. Just okay. Traffic getting back to the hotel was almost longer than the trip itself!
Excellent tour and a great guide!
Excellent tour - my guide Erwin was full of energy, easy to talk with and enjoyed sharing the sites and information about this small colonial gem. This is what I call a living historical site - amongst the ruins people are attending school, using the administration and court house buildings and doing their daily activities. Make sure you see the view of the city on the north side with the volcanos and the old church that is now a hotel.
great tour and wonderful guide - our driver was excellent and we got to see the city in a wonderful way - just the right combination --
