  • It was nice outing. If you are fun of Road of the Ring, this is the place.

  • This is magical place to visit, even if you aren't a fanatic movie fan! The landscape is stunning and the tour was excellent. We went in the slower season and it was still busy. There was plenty of time to get photos and our guides were very friendly and knowledgeable. There was a short time to grab lunch in Mata Mata before heading to Hobbiton. The ice cream stop on the way home was a bit anti-climatic it is at a gas station. We stopped on the way there a couple of times to break up the drive. Traffic was a bit heavy coming back into Auckland but all in all a great tour.

  • Now one of my favourite places on the planet, must see!

  • The bus broke down on the way, luckily right next to a cafeteria so we could eat lunch early, and didn't lose much time while waiting for a new bus. In spite of being winter and it's been raining almost every day of my stay in Auckland, we were blessed with sunshine in Hobbiton. Couldn't have been a more perfect day. Great bus driver, great guide. This is an excursion I would recommend to any Lord of the Rings and Hobbit-fan. I'm sure it's fun even if you aren't.

  • Better than expected. Great group and guide. Fantastic.

  • Tour was fantastic, a great way to spend the day in North Island. Scenery and weather were perfect. Bus driver kept us entertained on the drive down, thank you!

  • What a fun tour! The drive is beautiful. The bus was nice and our guide/driver was friendly and professional. She gave us info on what we were seeing as we drove but also gave us time just to enjoy the beautiful ride. We made a quick stop for coffees and photos on the way there and a quick stop for ice cream on the way back. There were more than enough bathroom stops. The only thing that could've been a little better was our lunch stop...we had to rush a bit. Hobbiton itself was really great. I'm not much of a LOTR fan but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. We had the Ginger Beer at the Green Dragon which was so delicious that I bought a bottle to enjoy on our train trip from Auckland to Wellingtonalso a must do for visitors! I would definitely suggest taking this tour if you are any kind of LOTR/Hobbit fan.

  • The bus ride from Auckland was longer than we expected, but the trip was well-planned. The first stop was at a rustic Café for snacks and bathroom breaks. The second stop was shortly thereafter at a scenic overlook where the bus driver took a group photo. We had lots of fun joking about taking photos and asking the person to just make one step backwards. That lands you into an Electric Fence providing a shocking photo.

The next stop was lunch at Matamata. Traffic problems had reduced our lunch time to 20-25 minutes. The driver told us to just choose a café, but we didn't know which one to use and by the time left the Hobbiton information building and chose one, we had a very quick and disappointing lunch. We arrived at Shire's Rest about 15 minutes before our tour time of 2:00 PM. The Hobbiton tour guide was Claire and she was wonderful. She helped with photographs and gave us a lot of background information on the film and the set. The set itself was a lot of fun and well kept. It was a delight walking in the footsteps of the Hobbit, the Ring Bearer - - along with the Gaffer and Best Boy.

We did get our free drink at the Green Dragon Inn which could be beer. We added a delicious tomato soup to our order, but that was all we had time for. 15 minutes went by very quickly.

On the way back the driver asked if anyone wanted to stop for ice cream at the gas station - what looked like a typical 7-11. She said a cone was 1.50 NZ, so one of our group decided to try it. The clerk counted out the number of cones, called her boss to take over the front, and then put on a sanitized glove. Now came the fun part. She scooped the ice cream by hand no tool, stuffed it in the cone, and then shaped a softball size scoop on the top. How she did 8 cones without freezing her fingers, we didn't know. We had Hokey Pokey, It was incredible. It was the best item for the price of our entire trip. Ha.

We had lots of traffic issues on the way back and had one more pit stop. It was about 7-8 PM when we got back.

We scouted out the pickup area the day before, and my hat is off to anyone who can find 40 Darby Street. I sent an email to the contact email address - that night and they gave me a quick response back with an additional landmark. It would have been nice to have some additional information in the last email before the tour - such as the actual tour time and an approximate return time. It would also have been nice to know at that time - the name of the excellent bakery mentioned in the description. Trust me, we did not find it.

We had considered some of the tours that include something else with the Hobbiton visit, but that would have been way too much for us. This was just right for us.

Overall, it was a great tour. The Ice Cream Stop was a hoot.

  • Hobbiton was great but our bus driver was kind of rude and the bus was freezing the whole time because the heater was broken. We felt like penguins huddling in the back of the bus. The location was great though. You have to go if you ever are in Auckland I just might have gone with a different tour

  • Outstanding in every way possible. What a great tour. A must see and do for all ages.
