Stop At: Rio Celeste, Tenorio Volcano National Park, Province of Guanacaste
You'll then engage in a 4-hour hike that is a bit tough for some but the end result is definitely worth it. After your 4-hour hike you'll get to the Rio Celeste (Blue River). The blue color you'll see is the result of a chemical reaction between two merging rivers containing different volcanic minerals. It's a very rare phenomenon which creates a fairy-tale-like beauty. You'll get to see a waterfall, a lookout point that's great for taking pictures and you'll also get to see the place where the river changes colors.

The trip was very good and so was the food, great quide, and the spots to view! Great travel experience
Had the best time on the Rio Celeste tour! Santiago was an amazing tour guide and made the experience what it was. Definitely would not have seen the animals we saw by ourselves and the swim in the water was so wonderful!
This was seriously the best tour we've ever had in our lives. The Drive felt really save and Santiago is so funny, authentic and will make your day for sure an adventure. He knows so much about the plants, animals and different things that the amazing jungle and its surrounding has to offer. This is a real pura vida experience what felt like a beautiful jungle safari and we can recommend this tour 200 percent. It was perfectly fine to end this epic day with a authentic costa rican lunch and a cool swim in the blue water. For us it felt more like a longer walk than a hike and no matter if it will be challenging for you or not - it will be worth it! 🥰 Thank you so much!! We would have never been able to see so many animals ans discover so much beauty without Santiago.
The tour was amazing from beginning to the end! Pickup was sharp on time and the driver was very kind. Our guide Santiago was amazing. So funny and had a very good eye for animals and plants. He was always ready to give us explanations on the flora and fauna of the park. We were fortunate with the climate and the water on Rio Celeste was bright blue. We didn’t have much luck with animals inside the park, nevertheless, Santiago was able to see many animals alongside the roadway and was very willing to stop and show then to us with no rush. We also stopped to bath on the waters of Rio Celeste and they bought and offered a very sweet pineaple as a treat to us! Lunch was a very nice homemade Costa Rica casado. Overall we spent almost 5 ours together as a group and it was highly enjoyable! Would definitely recommend if you enjoy nature and animals. Be aware that medium to intense hiking levels are involved with stairs included.
This hike was amazing! The waterfall was beautiful and we weee lucky even though it had rained that morning the river still had that blue color. We got to the bend where you could see the color change. I would describe this as a medium level hike. Bring extra water. It starts slow. There are a lot of stairs that were at different heights. I’m very short and without the help of our guide it would have been very difficult. Santiago was the best. He was funny at times and always looking for animals. He was very helpful on the stairs. The tour end with a short drive the to the river for a swim. The water was cold but refreshing. We were pickup and drop off at our Airbnb. I definitely recommend it!
Santiago did a fantastic job being our tour guide! We saw so much wildlife, including rare animals that are hard to find. Swimming after our hike and getting lunch at an authentic Costa Rican restaurant afterwards made the trip. Would totally recommend!
This was the best tour experience I have had the opportunity to go on. Santiago was extremely knowledgeable and had a great sense of detecting wildlife where we would've missed out on a lot had it not been for him! He was incredibly friendly and also let other travelers along the trail in on what he was able to find. The lunch we had was one of the best casados I've had during my stay in Costa Rica, my mouth is watering just thinking about it! The hike was not terrible but be sure to bring water and bug spray. The only thing I will make a comment on was that I requested a Spanish group but was put with an English-speaking group. It wasn't an issue but I would check before hand if that is an important detail for you/your group. The views were unreal and I highly recommend Red Lava but especially Oliver and Santiago as your guides. Thanks for everything, pura vida <3
The Red Lava Rio Celeste tour was an absolute gem of a hike. Our tour guide, Santiago, was a bundle of fun, full of local Costa Rican knowledge and was the best guide to find all of the animals on the trail (snakes, spiders, sloths, birds, monkeys and more). He brought a zoom lens camera with him that aided in us being able to see animals deep in the forest which was a huge asset. In addition, our driver, Gilbert, was a class act and navigated the windy roads with expertise, even in the torrential downpour rains. The hike itself was moderate in nature and took roughly three hours. Santiago was able to get us in early so that we could visit each stop with minimal interference with other groups. He also surprised us with fresh pineapple when we took a dip in the river which was very refreshing after a hot hike. The logistics worked out perfectly; the hike was the first stop, from there he let us change in the bathrooms before the dip in the river, then we were able to change again prior to arriving at the Soda for lunch. The car was secure the entire time with Gilbert and we felt extremely safe. Lunch at the local Soda was as local as it gets; with a choice of chicken, fish, beef or veggies. Finally, Santiago went out of his way once we were done with the hike and took us to local properties to see even more animals. All in all, I would highly recommend this hike and tour company.
This is a must do excursion. Transportation came and picked me up from my hotel to bring me to red lava headquarters in the town of la fortuna. We then headed in a clean van to Rio Celeste! We stopped along the way at a bakery to have a snack and use the bathrooms. We continued on our journey, the roads were really bumpy lol. The Hike is pretty strenuous so be prepared! I had hiking/water shoes that did wonders for my feet! there are alot of uneven surfaces and steps. The view was worth it, the waterfall/ river looks magical. The hike was about 4 miles total ( 2miles in and 2 out). Our tour guide Santiago was very knowledgeable and friendly. We saw a lot of animals on our hike to the waterfall (reptiles mostly). We then headed to a local swimming spot less than a mile from the park entrance. IT WAS BREATHTAKING, like a scene right out of a movie. You are unable to swim in the park so this tour is a great alternative, other tours dont give swimming opportunities in the rio celeste river. We were able to swim for about 45mins. We then continued a few minutes down the road to a local restaurant to have a typical costa rican lunch. Everything was delicious. Our driver Oliver ( only spoke spanish) stopped several times along our way home so that we can see the monkeys swinging in the trees, we stopped again to see a breathtaking view of the arenal volcano and a tucan sitting in the tree! I highly recommend this trip !!!!!!!!
Great tour, Santiago was charismatic and very knowledgeable, lunch was great, and the river was surreal. All the wildlife we saw was a great bonus
