Know More about this tour

Start your day by leaving Mount Maunganui and crossing the harbour bridge to Tauranga City and take the inland direct route to Rotorua. Your guide will explain the history of this old drover's road as you travel through deep gorges, native and plantation forests and farmland before arriving in Rotorua.

See the main sights of this very interesting city, such as the Government Gardens, the Bath House, Blue Baths and the Rotorua lakefront before heading to Te Puia, the home of the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute and the location of the famous Pohutu Geyser.

Here, you can visit the carving school and see craftsman fashion traditional wood carvings and watch the Maori women demonstrate flax weaving. Take a short walk through the geothermal valley of Whakarewarewa to view the boiling mud pools, the famous Pohutu Geyser and steaming vents that make Te Puia such a unique destination. There is also chance to see New Zealand's iconic flightless bird, the Kiwi in a purpose built Kiwi-house.

This tour includes a Maori Cultural Performance on the Marae. Here, you will be greeted onto the Marae grounds following the challenge by warriors before taking your seats for the concert inside the meeting house. You will see the traditional songs, dances and demonstrations of fighting skills [including the famous Haka].

Time will be allotted for lunch at Te Puia to enjoy lunch (at own expense) before continuing onto the next destination, Hells Gate, which is a place of extreme contrasts and includes the largest hot waterfall in the southern hemisphere. See the steaming fumaroles and pools of boiling mud as you stroll through this geothermal landscape.

You do have the option to try mud bathing here, either as an alternative to the geothermal valley walk, or time permitting, as an additional activity. Extra charges will apply and can be arranged on the day of visit.

Departing Hell's Gate, your return to the port will be along the coastal route taking you past the extensive Kiwifruit orchards that are such an important aspect of the regions economy.

Your tour concludes with your personal guide bidding you farewell at the port gates in plenty of time before your ship departure.

  • There were 6 of us on this tour. Our guide Russell was fabulous! He was very informative and the stops were all inyeresting!

  • Liz McLaren was our tour guide and was an excellent tour guide. He was so knowledgeable and personable. TePuia was fascinating, We had a Maori greeting ceremony that was followed by a cultural performance inside the meeting house which we really enjoyed. Then on to lunch at a lovely restaurant on the lakeour expense but good prices and good food. Hells Gate was fascinating, boiling mud pools and thermal vents plus the hot water falls. We were allowed to roam at our own pace to explore as little or as much as we wanted. On the way back, we stopped at a Kiwi farm and had a tour of Tauranga Beach. A lovely day!

  • We were fortunate to have only 4 of us in total on this excursion. Our driver was local so had loads of interesting information about the area. The beach area was gorgeous, the ride to the geyser and thermal pools was picturesque. The geyser was active and fantastic to see. The thermal pools were interesting, but the show the Maori put on was the best part of the first park. Then it was on to Hell's Gate. The mud pools and the thermal pools at Hell's Gate was truly amazing. The ability to walk around without crowds and see, feel and learn was great! Our driver took us to some spectacular waterfalls on the way back. Worthwhile excursion!

  • Excellent trip .. despite the pouring rain ! Great guide .. helpful and knowledgeable .. plus only 2 other travellers ! My first visit to Rotorua Area and the tour exceed all my expectations.

  • We loved this tour, we opted to have a mud bath at Hell's Gate, it was not what we expected but it still was good. It is worth the money

  • Tour was great, very personel. Peter our guide was very knowledgeable about the area and best of all, he looked and even sounded like David Kosh

  • Excellent trip. Peter Peter600 was an excellent driver and guide to our small group of 4. Very informative with a good sense of humour. Te Puia with the Cultural Show and of course the geysers were the highlights but the rest of Rotorua was also very interesting and worthwhile as was seeing the kiwifruit plantations. Most visitors just see Te Puia and Rotorua but we felt that the Hell'sGate add on was also fascinating and very different to everything else with its boiling mud pools and lakes. I was hoping for something more 'hellish' but although hot enough that day there were no devils and pitchforks visible. Despite that it was definitely worth it and made our visit to the Rotorua area far more memorable. Recommended.

  • Great trip and Hells gate Thermal Bath is one of a kind experience. strongly RECOMMENDED!

  • Wonderful excursion. Our guide Peter was exceptionally knowledgeable he answered every question thrown at him. Knew just where to stand for the best pictures and was very personable. The thermal activity in each place was amazing.

  • We had a great day. Peter our guide was extremely knowledgable and gave us some excellent tips throughout the day on how to make the most of our time at each site. There ended up just being two of us on the tour so we were very pleasantly surprised that we were not asked to join a different tour . We were given a people mover instead of a bus and thoroughly enjoyed our tour. Peter the guide added a great deal to the experience
