Overview

Take our open safari truck to see the real Dominican Republic, beyond your resort in Punta Cana!
Leaving Punta Cana and traveling towards Higuey, the largest city in the Dominican Republic's eastern region, the excursion makes a stop in front of a local school where the safari team sponsors a community project that benefits several villages with basic education.
Passing through the vast sugar cane fields so common to the east of the Dominican Republic, the tour then visits one of the country's most famous churches - the Basilica de Higuey, dedicated to Our Lady of the Altagracia, the patron saint of the Dominican Republic.

My husband and I signed up for the 5 hour tour. We were at the designated place waiting for pick up which didn't happen! I messaged the tour group who then called me to tell us that the tour was cancelled for that day because they didn't have enough people. So they put us on the tour for the next day which had enough people. We were picked up on time the next day expecting to be back in 5 hours only to find out from tourists on the bus that it was the 9 hour trip! It would have been nice if the tour company had informed us of this the day before so we would have been prepared clothing-wise etc for the longer trip. (This trip also included horse back riding and the beach which the one we signed up for did not!) Nevertheless, the places we visited were just okay and the lunch was adequate. The stop at the basillica was very brief and we didn't get to see it's museum. The beach at Macao had really rough surf and certainly wasn't as pretty as the many beaches we have visited in the Dominican Republic. The best part of the day were all the great people we spent the day with on the safari bus especially our tour guide, Sammy, who was personable, funny, entertaining and knowledgeable. We had a great photographer, Waldrin (Don't remember how to spell his name), a superb bartender, Jojo, and an exceptional bus driver, Eduardo.

    Great day out

So many things to do in one day. It was the employees Jonathan that made it so interesting. Going to the market and meeting a family was humbling. I have told everyone I have met it was the best thing we did all week!
