Overview

Depart Amman-jordan">Amman for Petra that is located 140 miles (225 kilometers) South of Amman. Petra once dominated the trade routes of ancient Arabia. Pass by Little Petra the Nabateans carvan stop before heading to the main city. Your visit to this hauntingly beautiful place begins with a walk through the Siq, a narrow path that was once the main entrance to the city. An impressively long, deep and narrow gorge of stunning natural beauty, the Siq is hemmed in by cliffs soaring up to 263 feet (80 meters) , and measures three-quarters of a mile (1.2 kilometers).

Petra is all that it is shown to be in photos, but.... Allow enough time to explore it all. There's much more than the Treasury which appears on all the photos. A whole day would be good. Our Guide allowed only an hour! There is a 2km walk from the visitor centre to the treasury. An easy walk down through rock formations but a more difficult climb back up. Pony Carts are available ($20US pp) but need to be booked. Again our guide didn't book and we were left to negotiiate a ride back which cost $30 US pp one way. Petra is a 2-3 hr drive from Amman. There are hotels at Petra and in the nearby town.. The place itself is amazing but beware the trinket sellerss who are very pushy.
