Know More about this tour

The Trails and Rails package is one of our most popular, giving you the chance to experience both the Durango Silverton Train and the infamous Million Dollar Skyway. You will not want to miss this spectacular roadway; a two-lane blacktop forms a swirling ribbon through the San Juan Mountains, the wildest and most rugged peaks in the Colorado Rockies. It is rated one of the top 10 most scenic drives to do in the United States. We will be sure to hand-pick your seats on the side of the train that has the most magnificent views.

In the early morning, meet the coach bus in the train parking lot. The bus departs for Silverton where you will discover the high country on your guided 4×4 tour. Back in Silverton you will break for lunch and shopping on your own. Later, board the Narrow Gauge train in Silverton. Finally, you will depart for Durango and arrive back in the early evening.

Kids 3 and under can ride on your lap on the train portion if you want to save the money on their train ticket.

Wear dark clothes because of the soot from the train.

TOUR Started off great with nice bus ride up to Silverton,Jeep ride was bumpy and wet but we were prepared and got a bonus sighting of a moose and bear. Our driver was very knowledge about the history as well as the flora and fauna of the area. Our issue and the reason for the lower rating came on the train ride. We paid for the upgraded car and what Rio Grande RR calls an upgraded car was not what we had in mind.An open air car with plush bench seats where one is exposed to the elements is not an upgrade to me.We had to pay an extra 70 dollars to get in an enclosed car with an attendant who offered free non alcoholic drinks and some souvenirs along with personal showing of key points along the route to Durango.Viator and the RR need to do something about this.To be fair we were given the upgrade as defined by the RR but this is not right for the extra money. We had already got wet on the Jeep and it was cooler than we are used to down here in triple digit country. So what Happened? It rained in on the upgrade car during the trip along with a chilly downdraft breeze. This to me was not right for the passengers who paid the extra money

My 16 year old nephew was visiting. I booked this trip hoping that he would like it. He did, especially the jeep ride. Our driver/guide Doug did a great job driving and giving us a lot of great information. We got to see a moose and a bear. Very exciting. The train is something that I have done several times. I always enjoy it. The scenery is gorgeous. We rode in the open care and could really see the landscape go by. There were some thrilling points where you look down into the deep gorges where the Animas river flows. The track really seems to almost hang over the river. This trip combination is great for anyone.

One of the highlights of our 18 days trip through America. The scenery was amazing. Our driver/tour guide was really friendly, informative, had great sense of humour and made us feel super comfortable and enjoy the trip up to Silverton and the 4x4 to the mines and the lake at the highest altitude. The train ride back was almost 4 hours long. We went for the open gondola wagon and I am so happy we did that. We felt really close to the scenery and the sounds of the Animas river, also we could switch sides in the wagon and be always close to teh most scenic parts. We wish the trip were longer. It was so relaxing and beautiful.
In General, one of the best things we did in America.

First of all, everyone should know that the scenery in this part of Colorado is pure eye-candy!!! Make sure your digital camera has a fully loaded battery...and bring a spare. Doug, our driver/tour guide, was super informative, patient and funny to boot. We spent quite a bit of time in the van and the 4x4, but his personality made it really enjoyable. The van is fairly comfortable for the ride up to Sliverton but the 4x4 was a rough ride. A little extra padding around the sides would have protected our ribs. All in all, though, both were a great rides, with great photo opportunities. The 3.5-hour train ride back was also great. We went all out an paid for the upgraded enclosed train car, where we had a fantastic narrator. She took on the roles of a couple of pioneer women, who had lived through the earlier development of the region, and did it superbly. On top of the that, the story about the bear that kept breaking into her own house was hilarious. She made the trip go by fast with her narration, and there was still enough time to take a load of picture of the scenery. An expensive trip, but well worth it!!

Our tour guide Doug was one of the best we have ever had. We have traveled to Europe a lot.
He picked and named 7 species of flowers for the ladies on the tour. He knew the history of several abandoned mines. He knew a lot about the geology of the rock formations. recommended restaurants in the area. Made suggestions for trails/hiking and mountain biking. So much fun!!! A

We loved the Full-Day Trail tour with Jay. He was very entertaining and informative of the area he drove us to. Great driver as well! I would definitely recommend him to a friend and book a ride with him again.
The train ride back to Durango from Silverton was wonderful. Learnt a lot from the staff on board as we passed different areas. The views seen on both the Trail and Rail tours were breathtaking! Counted four does/hinds during the trip!
