Get insights into the civilian experience of the bloody battle by visiting the restored home of George Washington Shriver.

Know More about this tour

Board your comfortable, air-conditioned coach at Washington DC's Union station and travel 2.5 hours through the scenic Maryland and Pennsylvania countryside to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Listen to your guide provide historical background on the momentous Battle of Gettysburg during your drive. Fought in 1863, this three-day battle between Confederate and Union troops caused the highest number of casualties of any American Civil War battle more than 46,000.

Your first stop in Gettysburg is Shriver House Museum, where you'll receive a living history tour which lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Tour the restored house of George Washington Shriver, located in the midst of the fighting during the Battle of Gettysburg. Learn about the harrowing experience of Shriver's family during the battle, visit the home's attic where two Confederate sharpshooters died, and see authentic Civil War bullets discovered in the house more than 100 years after the war.

After this visit, we will depart and enjoy a break for lunch (own expense).

Continue to the Gettysburg Battlefield and enjoy time to explore on your own. At the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, watch a film about the battle narrated by actor Morgan Freeman and see a variety of informational exhibits about the battle commonly considered a turning point in the American Civil War. Admire the Gettysburg Cyclorama, a stunning miniature military diorama that depicts the fierce battle with the help of narration and sound effects. Throughout your visit, expert guides are on hand to answer your questions about the Battle of Gettysburg and its aftermath.

We will board the coach again at 1:45pm to begin our Battlefield Tour. This portion of the tour lasts approximately 2 hours.

Relax on your drive back to Washington DC, where your 10.5-hour tour concludes at Union station.

The trip left right on time and our driver, Bob, was excellent. We really enjoyed the tour and stories on the Shriver House and the tour guide for the battlefield, Ray, was awesome. Overall the trip was well worth the price.

Our driver was great! On time, very punctual and kept us on track. We picked up a tour guide at the Gettysburg museum and he rode with us, giving us full details of the battle. Highly recommended.

The tour was really good. The driver did a really great job. The national park has great facilities. Our only criticism is that the tour had too much wasted time so that the return journey hit the worst of rush hour traffic.

I really enjoyed my daytrip from Washington DC to the battlefields of Gettysburg.
The trip included comfortable busride , a stop at Gettysburg Visitor center , A vist at the Shriver House and of couse a two hours guided tour of the battlefield.

I recommend the tour for all interested in American history.
A perfect daytrip out of DC.

Bus ride was comfortable and our driver was informative. It took 2 hours to get there. We were able to get on and off bus to walk around the different battleground sites and monuments. Another reviewer mentioned lunch choices were not appealing, so I packed a picnic thinking we could set up under a tree somewhere and enjoy the view. Unfortunately, we were driven about 2 miles away to a dismal shopping area with a food court. No choice was given. This needs to be re-evaluated. Gettysburg had a few small restaurants that could have worked (our group was about 16). I would prefer to give my lunch business to a local restaurant owner than a food court chain. Guides were all great. Loved what they did and it showed. Overall great experience, except for lunch.

Very well organised trip, although the joining instructions 'Union Station' could have been more specific for people not from DC - it was actually the Bus Station at the rear of Union Station which I only discovered after 20 minutes.
The trip itself was good with a visit to the Shriver house (recreated building in Gettysburg itself), the visitor centre plus a two hour tour of the battlefield with a very well informed guide. The bus driver was also very informative providing background and historical context during the 2.5 hour journey to and from Washington.

Bus trip long especially as the airconditioner in the 15 seater van wasn't working (on a hot and humid day) and the driver arrived at 8.30 when the written information stated departure was 8am. The driver assured us that he always left at 8.30! He was helpful and gave us some information along the way. The guide at the battle site was excellent, not just in his knowledge but engaging and involving visitors of all ages. We were informed as we arrived at the visitor centre that security wouldn't permit any back packs, food or drink inside the centre. There was no real security check-in and small backpacks didn't seem to be a problem, but we had to eat our pre-purchased lunch outside under a shelter. Exhibits and audio-visual inside were excellent. Well worth the trip if you are interested tro know more about the American Civil War

Great driver. Marvelous your guide. Well worth the trip. Also visit to Shriver house on tour. Rained but didn't dampen the day!

You can read all the books and watch all the films about Gettysburg but none of that compares to being on the ground, walking the fields, woods and hills that the armies traversed 150 years ago and following the arc of the battle as it moved from west to east through the town. The bus ride was extremely comfortable, the driver was friendly and knowledgeable, and our battlefield guide was so thoroughly versed in the event that the narrative just flowed out of him and he handled every question serenely and securely. We were especially impressed when an elderly gentleman (87) who was in Washington to attend a reunion of Korean War veterans mentioned that he had ancestors who had fought at Gettysburg with the small Florida contingent, and the guide had the driver stop at the Florida regiment monument for a photo opp.

    This tour is highly recommended.
