Overview

This is Edinburgh's original ghost tour. We've been wandering the streets of Old Town Edinburgh since 1984.

Your guide is Alexander Clapperton (deceased), a one time cemetery director. He will blend history with humour and facts with fables, while our creation - the "jumper-ooter" provides guaranteed ghastly appearances.

Explore the cobbled passageways around the Old Town and hear tall tales from the citys dark past on this light-hearted outdoor 80 minute tour.

Our tours operate outdoors through rain, snow, lightning and even sunshine, so please dress appropriately and comfortable footwear is recommended.

Know More about this tour

Number 84 West Bow, down near the bottom of the not-so-sunny side of picturesque Victoria Street in Edinburgh's Old Town, is an unassuming address amongst the majesty of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the shop today, you can find a cornucopia (we don't use the word lightly; we looked it up and everything) of ghoulish and fantastical stationery, drinkware, ornaments, soft furnishings, original artwork and art prints, greeting cards, chess sets, and unique oddities hard to even describe. In 2015 we also became (possibly) Scotland's smallest museum, when the shop became host to a calling-card case made from the skin of the notorious 19th-century "body-snatcher" (actually murderer), William Burke. We can't sell you that (mainly because even the experts on Antiques Roadshow couldn't give us a valuation of it) but we have produced a rather spiffing souvenir newspaper taken from our own vaults and covering Burke & Hare's trial in some detail.

With my friends getting an earlier train home from Edinburgh after our week exploring the Fringe, I was looking for something to keep me entertained until my coach home. Having checked on the Tesco Clubcard website to use up some of my vouchers, I came upon this tour. Why not check it out? I am extremely glad I did. Edinburgh is the perfect place for a ghost and gore tour, with so many stories to be told. Mr Claperton and his 'glamorous' assistant took us through the streets of Old Town, telling us some of these stories with superb knowledge and humour. You could tell they genuinely enjoy their jobs and bounced off each other really well, getting us involved when we were needed. The only challenge of the tour was navigating through the packed Fringe crowds, however, we managed it and made it to some of the quieter areas. I was very happy the tour ran slighter longer than the 90 minutes I was expecting, and cannot recommend it highly enough. If you want to learn more about some of the stories of Edinburgh and its people, with some fun and scares thrown in, this is the tour for you!

Mr. Clapperton and associates are entertaining, engaging, and highly informative. Not to mention absolutely hilarious! We booked our tour at the store, several hours later, we were late for the tour and weren’t checked off the attendance list (as we were running up the Royal Mile we spotted the group and joined in). When we visited the store again after the tour was completed, the woman who helped us originally remembered us and voiced her concern that we hadn’t checked in. She even put aside the included book in case we hadn’t been able to get one during the tour. For the 1 and a half hour tour we enjoyed the history, humor, gore, and conversation with our group. We simply cannot recommend this tour enough!

Ourselves and our 7 year old grandson had a real enjoyable time with this tour. Met some interesting characters along the way. Very good value for the money.

The Cadies &Witchery evening tour is amazing fun and also educational. It's the one tour to go on in Edinburgh.

The tour was fantastic. A few jump scares, really educational and we saw a few areas off of the Royal Mile that we wouldn't have noticed otherwise. The two hosts were exceptionally engaging. Younger children might find some of it heavy going but my 14 year old nephew and my 34 year old self loved it!

It has been many years since I have done this tour and I was delighted that it was every bit as good as before. A fun way to learn about Edinburgh from Alexander Clapperton (deceased) and his friends. Well done Cadies & Witchery!
