It is located on Poniente Beach, Gijons Aquarium is one of the richest aquariums of Northern Spain. It was opened in 2006 with the following areas: reception, permanent exhibition, exhibition room, classrooms, marine mammals recovery area, bird observatory, shop, visits area, terrace and restaurant.
The visit is divided on 12 seas and rivers where you can find more than 4000 individuals, vertebrates and invertebrates of more than 400 different species:
Cantabric River, Cantabric Coast, Cantabric Continental Shelf, Temperate Atlantic, Tropical Atlantic, Cold Seas, Indo-Pacific, Coral Reef, Red Sea, The Indian African, The South Atlantic and The Subtropical Atlantic.
You can learn about the species, their way of life, its food, their adaptation to the environment and its specific characteristics. You can see different species as salmon, eel, otter, trout, scorpion fish, rays, mollusks, jellyfish, octopus, sharks, mackerel, croakier fish, clown fish, sea horses, puffer fish, turtles, moray eels and penguins.
Apart from the typical visits, the aquarium organizes different activities and exhibitions, especially for children.
For example, during holiday periods, it usually has workshops for children based on environment and the species of the aquarium, where they play and learn on a different way.
There are also different exhibitions about reptiles, environment, photography, painting and much more.
